Irig2 HD And Garage Band

I just got a new ipad and an iRig Pro Duo in september. I am pretty happy with it. There's been a slight learning curve and I'm still getting used to everything. I come from a pro-tools background with a firewire DAW and was looking to go simple, light, portable and settled on this approach.

I debated 2 channels and am glad I have the Duo since now I can have a vocal mic or have 2 channels going at the same time. For recording band practices, I'd say the best bet is to get one of those little mp3 recorders since an iRig and garageband is more about multi-track recording.

I just got an iPad (Black Friday deal) and want to play with Garage Band too. The iRig type devices have lots of mixed reviews..from "great" to "poor sound quality".

I'm curious on the iRig Pro but at $150-200 it seems I could get something better and skip Garage Band app altogether.

Seems the OP is asking to record live sessions as opposed to recording, but a TB search didn't reveal much on Garage Band and this thread title fits. Maybe others have experience with use cases for this app as well the OP's needs.

Well what are you looking to do? Record your friends 9 piece band live in a single take or maybe some of your own music where your u may want to play and song at the same time to separate tracks? Those are the questions...I got an IRig duo assuming vocal and instrument or intpstrument + instrument w a friend...plus it had MIDI.

turned into a great buy as now I am using the iPad interface for GarageBand, the USB interface to jam on the internet via jamkazam...and the 2 MIDI channels as an in/out for programming and testing out the future impact pedal I just got.

I am also able to quickly set a keyboard MIDI controller up and SampleTank or Syntronik with a mic so my daughter can jam w me. I hemmed and hawed about the UI, it am happy where a I went since a I can use a battery or a one spot or USB power as well. So...at the end of the day, what do you want to do? The Ik IRig duo has not let me down yet in anything I want to do.

I was looking at it for multi-track recording and probably some looping for practice. I use a drum machine app as a metronome sometimes, it'd be useful to have it recorded in the same app.

So do you need 1 channel or 2? MIDI? If so, in or in and out? Plug in to outlet stationary or mobile? USB Power? Etc...
Once you start identifying your needs the list gets shorter. Go into a store and find someone who knows what they are talking about and talk about your setup and what you want to do...there might be bundles that include software that gives more value add...

I still love it so far. I'm new to Garageband and am using it on an ipad. It's a bit clunky but still pretty easy to use. I haven't tried sharing sessions with people, but have had no issue creating/editing music and turning it into an mp3. iRig also supports various mobile devices so I can plug it into a laptop or a friend's computer (and then it is powered by USB). I've powered it with a battery and a 1 spot 9v plug.

What are your concerns? I have not read reviews after making my decision. The only negative I can think of is that it is plastic and probably not that durable if you drop it a whole bunch. I've used both ins XLR and 1/4" and have leveraged MIDI in/out functions, headphones and monitor outs and experienced no issues other than operator error of sending phantom power or having monitor off when I needed it on.
