Is an Ampeg 810 Overkill?

My brother uses an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro through a 410 classic, and that thing gets LOUD. Like many people are saying, if you're playing gigs that are all PA, you definitely don't need the 810. However, some people like having it there because it looks more badass than the 410, so that's personal preference. It's also personal preference as to whether you want to haul that 810 back and forth to every gig, upstairs, downstairs, sideways, etc.

What I find through playing tons of gigs is that more often than not, people are setting up gear shares and some dude almost always pipes in with, "I've got an ampeg fridge cab," so if you're gonna be gigging, you'll probably end up getting your share of uses of 810s anyways, and you won't be the poor bastard who has to load it out at the end of the night.

And also, not that this is any bit of solid argument for either side, but one fifth of gigs at least, the sound dude is DI'ing bass straight through the PA anyways for us now anyways.
At least you recognize it's not much of a solid argument ;)

My 8X10's were the original flat back cabs loaded with CTS AlNiCos
I rarely used both cabs, but it did help having the speakers up where you could hear them.

Actually the loudest projection point on those cabs is like 20-30 feet in front of the cab.

It would be overkill for me. My band has it's own PA so I always have FOH support, but even for those shows I have more than enough to carry a room with my 212T. However, If I was going to do a big outdoor show where I thought I'd need it, I'd just borrow my brother in laws 810. He owes me anyway from numerous gear loans!

Killer cab. If you can pick one up thru whatever program at your work, what downside is there really?

Well, I got it today! And it fits perfectly across the back seat of my 95 Accord!

So I have the opportunity to get an Ampeg 810. For no cash out of my pocket. It's through a program at work where we earn points with sales.

So what would you do? Get the 810 or keep the 410?

Answer: YES! Use the 410 at small gigs (or if stairs are involved), use the 810 for everything else. And -- CONGRATS! :)

Good thought: selling the 410 in favor of the 210 is definitely worth considering. Alternately, you could keep 410 and 810 and eventually add a 210. I'm not just trying to enable your GAS: modularity is a good thing! Example: my favorite cab of all time is a Bergantino NV610, a 6x10 version of the Ampeg 8x10. However I play a regular gig up a flight of stairs in a smallish bar, and for that I use a single neo 1x12 (28 pounds). I use a pair of those 1x12 cabs when I want an easy schlep but need more oomph. Finally, I have a pair of ceramic 2x10 cabs: I will use the pair (stacked vertically of course!) in rooms where I need volume but don't want to haul the NV610. So, my two 1x12 is roughly equivalent to a 2x10, my 2x2x10 cabs are roughly equivalent to a 4x10, and my 6x10 is equivalent to the 8x10 (even better IMO, but that's off topic).

I wouldn't do it. I have owned many cabs inclduing SVT810. They sound great but are extremely heavy and can be difficult to move on your own. I changed to two SVT410 cabs and have been much happier. Great sound, easier to move and the majority of the time I find that I only need one cab because most of the places we play have PA support.

Right now I'm getting back into playing with a band and I've got a GK 400RB and an Eden EX410. It's a decent cab but at 4 ohms I can't add onto it. I would probably get rid of the 410 and maybe someday upgrade to a 700RB or 800RB if I get the SVT.

So what would you do? Get the 810 or keep the 410? I've always wanted an 810 and this may be my only opportunity, especially for a new one. And of course I can always flip it for an even better 410 or 2.

Think I'm going to do it.

For me this cab it kills! With a SVT head probably it should be the first sound that it came to everyone in his head when it talks of r´n´r.

Eden sounds so good too but I´d rather Ampeg.
