Is an Ampeg 810 Overkill?

An 810 does not require you to be running an SVT head (some of you guys will disagree I'm sure;)). Amps with less power will sound AWESOME through an 810. Case in point, Ampeg V4B/SVT810e, PF350/SVT810e, heck, even an MB200/SVT810e.
I'd get the 810.
I've run all of them except the MB200 (sorry, but GK ain't my thang). Also ran a B-15 in one. Wasn't the loudest rig you will ever hear but it wasn't quiet, either. If I were looking for power tube distortion at levels that wouldn't get me fired but would still be respectable, a 25w amp into an 810e rules.

So I have the opportunity to get an Ampeg 810. For no cash out of my pocket. It's through a program at work where we earn points with sales.

Right now I'm getting back into playing with a band and I've got a GK 400RB and an Eden EX410. It's a decent cab but at 4 ohms I can't add onto it. I would probably get rid of the 410 and maybe someday upgrade to a 700RB or 800RB if I get the SVT.

So what would you do? Get the 810 or keep the 410? I've always wanted an 810 and this may be my only opportunity, especially for a new one. And of course I can always flip it for an even better 410 or 2.

Think I'm going to do it.
Ha ha, no, it's not overkill. In some of the genres I play in, a big cab is a basic necessity.

I would get it. I find big cabs with wheels on the bottom easier to move than smaller cabs I have to deadlift.

As well, it's nice having speakers closer to ear level.

I've run my PF350 into a buddy of mine's 810e and although it didn't have the wallop of an SVT, it packed quite a punch! V4B is on my GAS list so maybe one of these days I'll get the chance to try that also!

Sell me that Eden?

As great of a cab as it is if you do not have a real need for or reason to get the 8x10 over the 4x10 you already have then I say no. But yes it is such a great cab though - sounds like you are leaning towards doing it anyways. It will probably not be your "only chance" at a 8x10 cabinet however if it is at great price or something like that then perhaps it would be your only chance at a deal like that.

Maybe overkill for church. I'd like to put a Roland Cube set to the Concert 810 notch on a shelf in an empty Ampeg 810 cab.

An SVT 8X10 is nothing compared to hauling a Hammond B-3 and Leslie Cabs. :-)

You'll see soon enough, how easy the cab tips in and out of your vehicle.

BTW I always loaded mine either grill down or on its side.

My brother uses an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro through a 410 classic, and that thing gets LOUD. Like many people are saying, if you're playing gigs that are all PA, you definitely don't need the 810. However, some people like having it there because it looks more badass than the 410, so that's personal preference. It's also personal preference as to whether you want to haul that 810 back and forth to every gig, upstairs, downstairs, sideways, etc.

What I find through playing tons of gigs is that more often than not, people are setting up gear shares and some dude almost always pipes in with, "I've got an ampeg fridge cab," so if you're gonna be gigging, you'll probably end up getting your share of uses of 810s anyways, and you won't be the poor bastard who has to load it out at the end of the night.

And also, not that this is any bit of solid argument for either side, but one fifth of gigs at least, the sound dude is DI'ing bass straight through the PA for us now anyways.

Funny thing is after playing more than 900 shows, never once did a club owner dare to ask us to turn down.
When the floor is packed standing room only with college coed honeys and the customers are dancing their asses off and drinking like fish.
The band makes up the rules!

We also had our own $24,000 PA and sound man.
