Is anyone using true J single coils with a preamp?

I'd like to use a pre and get away from splits. I'm thinking Nordy NJ4 and Audere.
Any thoughts? With a good shielding job, can the noise and hum be minimal?
Tone baby tone.
Any advice or thoughts?

(BTW, I've got my Ultra-Jazz pair and OBP-1 and wired plate- v,v,b/t, tone - for sale over at TGP. )

I have a Seymour Duncan Antiquity II bridge pickup feeding an Aguilar OBP-1. It sounds great to me.

I don't see how you are relating the presence of a preamp to the pickups being single coil or humbucker? Is there a reason you are asking this question?

I'm running an audere with the stock singles in my jazz and it sounds great. Noise is extremely minimal--basically inaudible unless I add a bunch of dirt.

I've got a ACG pre in my Jazz, which on the advice of Alan C I've thoroughly shielded and earthed and it's as quiet as a baby. The ACG has a filter based eq, which probably helps. The variation I can get in tone across a wide spectrum blows me away.

Phil Maneri at Fifth Avenue Fret Shop has been encouraging my choice of installing Nordy Big Singles and a Nordy 3-band preamp in my Hanewinckel bass. Of course, it will also have an active/passive option.

Do I need to also mention that Phil also does bass reviews for Bass Gear Mag?

My main bass (Mike Lull MV5) came with Basslines single coils and a Bart 3-band preamp. Sounds great and no noise / hum problems at all.

I do get hum from my Washburn Status
but its pretty much the same as my passive Jazz except amplified

I'm using Fender japan vintage SC's and a Sadowsky preamp, no noise problems at normal settings.

+1. I had Sadowsky single coils in my Metro UV70, and it was dead quiet.

They come standard on the new Will Lee, too. I don't think Roger or Will would do that if they felt hum was an issue.

People that use preamps are generally looking for a more modern sound from their basses as opposed to the vintage single coil vibe..

It would be more appropriate to go for humcancelling pickups in that situation because they offer the benefit of being much quieter, and the compromise of losing the "authentic" tone is not a concern any longer.

Of course. My Sadowsky jj5 has true singles and my Sadowsky Will Lee. Both have the Sadowsky preamp. Sounds fantastic, even when you dont pan either pickup.

I use single coils in my basses they are now my favourite pickups. I use Arron Armstrong pickups his single sound great and are very quiet. I do shield the bass and ground the pre-amp and pickups which all help to keep the noise very low.

Don't let anyone talk you out of single coils! Humbuckers are evil tonesuckers, keep them away from your bass!

Okay, just kidding. I have basses with both single coil and humbuckers. The thing is, if you want that single coil tone, you need single coil pickups. With the right preamp, you can retain the "authetic" vintage tone just fine.A good shield and ground job will take you a long ways in "quieting" your beast.

I think my trusty old Warmoth "wide 5" has single-coil Bartolinis feeding an Bartolini NTBT preamp. It definitely hums when you solo one pickup. And I couldn't care less because it sounds awesome!

My main tone on my Warmoth PJ bass (Aguilar OBP-1 preamp) is with the bridge pickup (SD Antiquity II) soloed. I get all sorts of crazy ass noises coming through my rig sometimes, depending on whats going on in the room with other gear, but 60Hz hum just goes with the territory. You can't get the glorious tone with a humbucker, so I just deal with it. It doesn't bother me as much anymore.

FWIW, my preamp is dead silent, but of course, naturally, boosting the bass and treble increases the volume of the noise as well as the signal. It isn't bad at all though.

I use an outboard Sadowsky with almost all my passive basses, if for no other reason than to pump up the bass in the mains, if needed. Sounds phenom. And you don't have to "commit" by putting in a onboard pre.
