Is bass fun to play?

You guys are a being relentless here. I don't think he's a troll, I think he didn't word his question very well and was mistaken for a troll.

I can relate to not liking guitar because of not wanting to play chords. When I first started playing, I hated chords/rhythm guitar. I wanted to play lead, so it just wasn't my thing. I picked up a bass and it really spoke to me. I could play the things I wanted to play!

MY, that is a splendid idea. To boot, you could be there ALL day, and just order your meals in. Delivery, eat your lunch ( a couple of speaker cabs pushed together back to back make a fine table) and Dinner right in the store. This way you can not only practice slap and pop, but just think of all of the important music biz contacts that you can meet, if you put in enough time @ the store. But we should caution you, The employees may well become jealous, and attempt to discourage your dreams and goals. They are only jealous because they did not think of this first, that and the fact that they are not talented enough to get to spend the entire day slapping and popping away on a FREE endorsement deal like you have. DO NOT be discouraged, stay till closing, then go home, and up date us on your progress.

This guy may not be a troll. This is often the "civilian" attitude towards bass.

It depends on the music. With some music, the bass isn't important, the lines are boring, and I therefore don't play that kind of music if I can help it. This is not all that significant to me since there is a universe of music out there where bass is beautiful, fun and rewarding.

I shall now pull a random song from my keister to illustrate:



And it goes on and on....endlessly.....

I don't think he's trolling either, he has been asking questions about beginner rigs, 4 string vs 5 for starters, 34" vs 35 scale. Seems pretty sincere if a bit naive, maybe young?

If thats so, I hope he isn't over whelmed by the fun loving reception he got here:eek:

exactly!

i took a look at his post. he's asking about different basses, lessons, how long it takes to learn. he's inquisitive about bass and came here for answers, which is what we're here for. apparently he doesn't know much about the bass, and i can't say i knew much more or asked any better questions when i first started.

It makes sense. He's likely taking in what pop culture is dishing out these days. How many songs that get play on the radio now are inspiring to the bassist?

We bass players should not be so defensive.

I totally hate playing bass, but what I hate even more is standing on stage with no bass in my hands, just plucking thin air. So, I have a bass in my hands at all times so people don't think I'm nuts.

But, I don't turn it up; so when you say you can't hear the bass, well, it was probably me you were listening to, or maybe I should say, weren't listening to.
