Is bass mute good for bluegrass?

A friend sent me a "bass mute" to try with my upright 5/8 Maple Leaf bass (Helicore strings). He said it would help get rid of extraneous sounds like fret noise or a buzz and produce a "thumpier" sound, good for the bluegrass I play at jams and in a band (amplified). But I already worry about having sustained-enough notes and being loud enough. Should I try it?
