Two of my all time favorites but...

I have one Deep Purple album and every Led Zeppelin album.

So there's that.

And I have 5 DP albums and the first 3 Zep albums. After that Zep kinda lost me.

Ah yes, the LP which contains “Woman From Tokyo”, but has so many great songs on it.
“Rat Bat Blue”, “Smooth Dancer”, “Super Trouper” , “Mary Long” And “Our Lady” instantly come to mind. Great album. Underrated too in many circles.

Just going by success (album sales) Zep are 3 to 1 more successful. So I voted no, but 300 Million and 100 Million albums sold are in the same order of magnitude, so maybe they are in the same league, but zep wins the league championship .

That's an odd example to use as they weren't a band anymore at that point and I'm assuming they hadn't played together in years...or played extensively with another drummer since Bonham.

I'm not a huge fanboy or anything and I'm not even a big fan of Plant's voice. Were they known for not being very good live? I haven't seen much live footage of them.

I never thought Zep was very good live. Page gets kinda sloppy live. But having said that, Blackmore live gets a little sloppy too. I guess maybe they get tired of playing the same way every show so they just kinda let it fly.

Exactly. Every post is a strongly held subjective opinion that can be boiled down to "how does it make you feel".

I was going to say the same thing. As far as vocals go, Yes rips ELP to shreds, imo. However, I think this is a much closer comparison than DP and LZ.

I like them both, but when you "individualize them out", to me at least, Zep's cast is superior at each instrument and vocally. JPJ "taught" me more about playing melodically than any other player has.

I think the European and American perspective on DP vs. LZ are quite different.
In America Deep Purple are generally not considered to be the same tier as Zep, while in Europe Zep and Purple are considered the same tier, because in Europe Deep Purple generally have a much higher status than in the USA. In America Zep could have a status "the ultimate rock gods". That was always my impression. Maybe I'm wrong.

Let's discuss.

As we all know, John Paul Jones played organ and bass for ledzep. Who played organ and bass on Deep Purple?

Couldn't find anything for Led Zeppelin.

I was never really a fan of Led Zeppelin. Didn't really appeal to me. Black Sabbath did, and Deep Purple definitely did. For me there's no comparison at all.

Each to their own, but I don't see where a parallel can be drawn. Both British bands. Both popular rock bands.
Is ELO in the same league as Fleetwood Mac? Is Elton John in the same league as Tom Jones?

I ain't a fan of either, but I do know that Purple actually wrote their songs unlike Zep who plagiarised theirs. So Purple are far superior than Zep in my opinion.
