This IMO is very true. But one thing about Crue and other less technical bands do IMO have something in their music that DT usually lacks. Feelings. JP solo's always sound very clinical and robotic to me. Where as the less technically proficient guys do not and IMO have much more feeling.

Is Dream Theater still relevant?

This IMO is very true. But one thing about Crue and other less technical bands do IMO have something in their music that DT usually lacks. Feelings. JP solo's always sound very clinical and robotic to me. Where as the less technically proficient guys do not and IMO have much more feeling.
DT is talented and all, but they are one of the least melodic bands I've ever listened to. Their songwriting has always seemed perfunctory at best.
The new album sounds like an amalgamation of their discography put onto one CD. Nonetheless, I love it.

I like a few of DT's albums... I think they did push prog rock/metal a little further up the bar, but to me music is music. If I am not a fan, I won't listen to it.
DT is a highly technical band, highly regarded by many a musician, so I can't say anything bad about them. I respect the fact that they did their part in the genre, and I do like a decent amount of their music. One point that was brought up though was the feel factor in their music. I wouldn't say they don't feel their music, I am sure they do, but a lot of people who listen to DT have a hard time getting through the technical playing to feel what they are doing.
Because they are an experimental band, they do run the risk of losing their hardcore prog fans, but DT are doing what they love to do, hats off to them.

I like DT and listen their stuff up until Metropolis Pt. II. IMO that album was the "peak" and I didn't expect them to top it.
Actually I am only hear to comment on using the ignorance as an excuse. It's OK not to like a certain genre or know nothing about it. BUT it is not OK to make a rather bold statement and then claim ignorance as a defense. That also goes for DT being non-melodic.

I think it's more like Dragonforce is the cube root of Dream Theater. And I'm not even a big Dream Theater fan...
Get the most technically proficient musicians in their own domain and put them in a band and in my opinion you get DT. Sure i agree that their latest album especially systematic chaos wasnt the greatest album theyve made, their best albums were in my opinion images and words and scenes from a memory.
That being said, i enjoy their instrumentals the best, i cant put my finger on it but its either the lyrics or labrie.

I agree. I loved them untill they made Octavarium. It just feels like they are uninspired. They sound, to me, like they are doing the same trick over and over for the last 3 albums. I listened to the new album and imho it sucks. Maybe the shouldn't make an album every two years but take a bit longer to get it right.
I still love everything untill Train of Thought. After that I gave up. There are lots of better progressive bands out there now a days.

I think this album is better than Systematic Chaos. Just as good as Octavarium, wich I like a lot. A good mix of heavy, technical stuff, and good melodies. SC was.... I don't know. It's good, but it's not really up there with the greats.
I still think Scenes from a memory is their best, and the best album ever made. But that's just me. And I'm not really a diehard DT fan.
And yeah, I miss Myung's originality. He was pretty unique on their first 2-3 albums, doing stuff that's not really "metal". Now it's just bass and guitar in unison all the way.
And dammit, get a decent bass tone. We can't hear ya, mate! We just feel you tickling our... you know.

Uh...Opeth? Porcupine Tree? Those two are really making waves.
With that said, I'm no Dream Theater fan. Used to be. But whether or not they're "relevant," they're still getting MAD popular once more-- I mean, they just cracked the US Billboard Top 10!
You´re kinda young aren´t you? It´s ok if you don´t like them but in my case, i would respect a band that has a bassist as killer as John Myung, i mean his style is the total opposite of what i would like to achieve, but man...does that guy have killer chops or what?
And even in the case i didn´t like the band at all...i wouldn´t compare them to Dragon Force :scowl:
You original question completely misses the point of a superband like Dream Theater: While I've been pretty underwhelmed with their last few releases, too, the fact is that Dream Theater has never concerned itself with being 'relevant' in the first place. They're quite above it. Or at least, they used to be. I think their major failing in the last few years is trying to BECOME relevant. They lost me around the time they put out Octavarium.
This is like that one thread where one youngin' here (relatively speaking-- I'm 21 myself) said Slayer's Reign In Blood was "not that brutal" because it didn't have breakdowns.

I respect you for a lot of things, mainly being a young rockin' bassist, but this is one of the dumbest statements I've ever read.
I'm not a big fan of them, I listen to them occasionally, but without Dream Theater, Progressive Metal wouldn't be what it is today.
Now the forefathers of Prog Metal are Queensryche and Fates Warning, but not a lot of people listens to them anymore, sadly.

Regarding Myung´s tone and presence in the mix...have you seen the "Score" DVD?

They are burned out, repeating themselves, sticking to a formula and they are just doing it for a living. This has been going on since Systematic Chaos. I really think that when you are a professional band you should be ashamed for bringing out this kind of stuff. They aren't even trying to evolve or progress. I haven't heard one note on the album where I got the feeling that they were excited by their music. But apparently people still buy their stuff and support them.
They should have made Six Degrees then bring out an Octavrium EP (With just the title track) and quited! Systematic Chaos and Train of Thought are decent but nothing more.
Then it would have been a band with an awesome range of discs. Even if you like it or not. But this new album is just terrible.

The problem with their new stuff is it makes people forget how good they were. I guess they are influenced by Metallica in more ways than just musically. It seems they want to emulate the general quality of their album output as well!
