Is Dream Theater still relevant?

Guys, I apologize for my post. I do. Im not a fan, and I was stating my opinion. I just think they have that corny, mid-80's, metal thing going on.

Opinions are a big part of TB, and thats mine.

I didnt mean to disrespect, none meant at all.

And please dont judge me on my age. There is nothing I hate more on TB than being judged by my age, when there are tons of guys who can back me up on a lot of subjects.

I admit, Im ignorant on Dream Theater. Just not my thing.

In my oppinion, any band that doesn't re-invent themselves record after records and just re-use the same formula records after records is bound to be out-dated and not relevant anymore, especially if they do it for 20 years or so and this regardless of genre, musicianship and talent.

Now, I must state that I don't like Dream theater or rush or any prog band of that era, to me they all sound very very dated, I would probably have liked them if I was the age I am now (mid-twenties) when they were popular but now those styles of 80's prog-rock (or call like you want as I might not be using the correct label) have been done and re-done so many times that even if a band pioneered that style it now sounds like corny 80's music to me as much as they can be good musicians.

Get used to it. In the real world you are judged by a whole lot of things including your age. Don't expect it to be any different on TB. THat said, I have rea this thread and it doesn't appear to me that you are getting judged by your age. It appears you are being judged because of your, as you have admitted, ignorant comments.

See, thats funny. I have been a TBer for a long time, with over 5000 posts, and always gotten along with Valerus. He is one of the many TBers whom I couldnt care less if they joke about my age.

Because they know me on a higher level than my birthdate. A TBer who has never acknowledged doesnt deserve the right to judge, period, none the less on my age.

Dream Theater is a talent band who seem to get hot and cold with their song writing. Every time I think they are done being interesting, they come out with something that changes my mind.

* When Dream and Day Unite (1989) - Solid, great first release.
* Images and Words (1992) - Excellent record, nice and deep, some really good songwriting.
* Awake (1994) - Solid record, a couple of great tunes, but less grabbing
* Falling into Infinity (1997) - Didn't care for it, found it boring
* Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) - Deja Vu, meh, thought about writing them off
* Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) - Surprised me, some very cool tunes, different for them
* Train of Thought (2003) - not bad, but a bit straight ahead
* Octavarium (2005) - again, not bad, but a bit straight ahead
* Systematic Chaos (2007) - hmm, feeling the deja vu again
* Black Clouds & Silver Linings (2009) - yeah, I am not loving it...

...but I am not so quick to write them off. Who knows what they'll do next.

Dream Theater has done more for prog metal than almost any other band but unfortunately they have fallen into a stagnant creative space where they just repeat the same thing over and over again, IMO theres only one redeeming, interesting riff on Black Clouds and Silver Linings, Near the beginning of A Nightmare to Remember and it legitimately has some soul in it, which is near unheard of for DT, the rest is kind of sub par IMO. Dont get me wrong, I LOVE DT, but lately ive been quite disappointed

Now, hit me for my age (16), but I will bet you there are not many of us who listen to music from when we were born, let alone like it! I've been listening to these guys before I was playing bass (woo a whole 3 years) since I was 10! So take my opinion or leave it, I honestly don't care.

Personally these last few albums (octavarium on) have been repeats. But still to this day damnit Change of Seasons and Panic Attack is my favorite song ever, and my favorite albums is probably got to be Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.
As for some of you saying you can't get past the technical part, thats the stuff I LOVE. I die for that stuff, (Hence why i also love melodic metal). I could never get into a slower solo but when Petrucci starts doing his sweeps and all his little intricate riffs. I just close my eyes and soak it in. but thats me. Although their old stuff was IMO better, the new stuff is repeating. But in the long run people are going to snuff off these last few albums and look at the farther back albums.

As far as my age, go ahead, I'm not self-conscious about it. I'm NOT saying that I know everything, and I'm certainly not trying to put anyone's opinions down. Just simply giving them some insight on what people like about their dislikes.

But I never really did like James that much. It sounds like he tries, but he just doesn't do it for me.

Hi all,

I'm a massive DT fan and have to agree that the last couple of albums are not they're greatest. But to expect any band to consistantly release albums of the caliber of Awake or Scenes is is a big ask.They have changed they're writing process and it doesn't yield the same results. Thats they're choice and as fellow artists we should respect that. I don't think any musican wants his/her name associated with a bad release so the idea of them going through the motions is absurd. Bands change over time. Its as simple as that.

This new album isnt the best. Even the 'epic' Count of Tuscany doesn't live up to songs like Octavarium, The Glass Prison and Metropolis I.

Just an ok album. WAY too Metallica now...and Portnoy is doing his growly call and response with LaBrie way too much on this album.
