Yeah, I should have said "financially" like buying lotto tickets.
My attitude toward playing in a cover band has been the same since I started playing in 1998: Being in a cover band today is like being on a softball team in the late 20th century, except it pays enough to buy your balls, bats and gas.
Originals band is a whole 'nother thing. For starters, being a binary thinker, I see playing an instrument or singing as a completely different skill than writing music. Those that like to write music may be terrible musicians, and vice versa. But there are LOTS of very good cover musicians in symphonic orchestras that have no desire to write.
I think about dabbling in writing music sometimes, but I also think about writing a book. It has little to do with being a performing musician. Ask the folks who wrote for Sinatra or Elvis.
