Is gluing nut absolutely necessary?

Not necessary at all. The string tension will hold a well fitted nut in place. If you absolutely must glue it then just a dab against the fret board will do. Don't glue it to the face of the peg head.

I was going to do a shim just now, and was frantically looking for super glue, but couldn't find any. Upon removing the nut, I was surprise to see there wasn't any to begin with, and realized it was pretty snug in there. So i figured I'd ask for some pro advice, just to make sure.

Turns out...i used the wrong pliers to remove the nut and chewed it up...so I had to order a new one anyway...

I use a little dab of white glue (PVA). It stays soft and I can generally remove nuts, no problem if necessary.
My yamaha bass doesn't have a slot...the nut sits against the end of the fret board and for this, especially, glue is a good thing to have.
