Is It Just Me? On your gig someone asking you 'Can I see your bass?'

I'm playing at this work function and during the setup/sound check, I put my bass in the case, close the lid and went to the Men's Room. The guitar player, whom I just met for this gig, takes my bass out of the case and is playing it and making adjustments to my amp!! Really!! Was I wrong for cussing him the hell out?
Do you other musicians do that to other musicians gear of whom you don't even know?

Yes, you were wrong for cussing him the hell out. The correct response would be to turn all the setting on his guitar amp to 5, put on his guitar, and pretend you are auditioning for a "The Who" tribute band.

I think that people forget a following is developed through personal connections -- not pushing people away.

You're in the selling business - not music business. Don't critique Con-yea... take a note.

Sure you can play my $3000 bass.... and yes I'll play freebird.

That's cool and all, but I wouldn't let a sweaty drunkard touch my gear. If he drops that bass I would be overly mad the whle gig and that wouldn't help the selling part. I'd rather be comofortable than worried.

Aside from that I don't want another guy's sweat on my gear. I even hate it when someone in my band touches my bass.

About the OP and some other posts: Why do people let their guards down so easily when it comes to women? Guy asking is a problem, but a woman totally fine. What assures you that she wouldn't put a ding on your bass or something more severe?

I've asked one guy to look at his bass at a show and he declined. Which I understand. I think if you ask someone that question you have to be prepared for them to shoot you down as they are in no way obligated to let you handle their instrument.

No one has ever asked me that, but since I've started playing out with my Ric I have gotten numerous compliments. :smug:

I'd only permit it if they told me they SLAPPA DA BASS MON!

But no, I wouldn't unless it was another bass player in a band playing the show.
I am very protective of my stuff because I spent my hard earned money on it.
I've seen way too many "accidents" where someone is "seeing" gear and knocks it over or damages it.
Not worth the risk.

That's the moment I leave the gig in rage quitting manner. That's outright disrespectfull.

Different circumstances, but I have to share...
About 10 years ago, I brought my Sadowsky to a tech that a geetar buddy of mine used for a long time to have some minor work done. Nice, knowledgeable, older cat. He was very interested in my bass because he's "never seen a Sadowsky ".
About a week later, I go to pick up my bass and he says; "Man that's a nice bass, I took it to my weekend gig because I just HAD to check it out".
Um, what!?!?!?!? Needless to say, that was the last time I've seen him. And fortunately, no harm came of it, but...... Really dude?!?!?!!

Happens to me all the time. Depending on my mood and their level of intoxication, I may allow a supervised visit. Funny story though, knowing how much it irritates me, I'd never pull that on someone else. I went up to a dude at a festival though, who was super cool, thumping away in a very funky little gospel band. I can't remember the brand but he was rocking a very cool sort of fender copy P bass on steroids. I spent most of the gig trying to figure out what it was, and it turned out it was a company I'd never heard of, and they made him a couple. His backup was equally cool. When I shook his hand and asked what the hell he was playing, he promptly told me about the company, how they customized them for him, took them both out of the case and handed me one. It was really nice. I can't for the life of me remember what the company was, which is unfortunate.

Keyword is situation. In jam situations or when i played in pickup bands i've been asked and if the dude cleared the security check i'll let him play my basses. With my rehearsed band it's NO WAY. Never asked to play or touch a bass but it happened that I've been offered to play on some pretty interesting instruments... This guy I didn't knew at all handed me his 1964 Jazz bass to see up close and even offered me to sit in for a song or 2... then he took off and showed up at the end of the set. Go figure

The proper way to let others play your bass...

I really hate it when I'm out gigging and some dude (never a female) approaches me, then comments on the bass or the sound, then ask 'Can I see it?', which means can I play your bass. :rollno:
That just rubs me the wrong way!! And I usually, but not always, refuse the request.
Is it just me? Should I participate in this guys attempt to show me he, too, can play a bass, or not?

Anytime a stranger asks to check out my bass I ask them one question:

How is it tuned?

If they cannot answer that question it means they don't play an instrument and I decline their request.

For me it depends on what I am playing. If it something cheap like my Danelectros that get a lot of attention and curiosity I don't mind, as long as they appear sober. If I was to take something more expensive out like a Rickenbacker id be much more inclined to say no. But for me its weird to say no when I was coming up I never asked but everybody was so willing to offer me to see there guitar.
