is it just me

I'll let other trustworthy musicians play with it, but not some schmoe. I always get a good giggle watching a guitar player try to play it and get confused by the B-string. It just seems silly to me when someone else straps on my bass. I don't know what it is but other people playing my bass just looks awkward; like they can't even hold it right. It probably doesn't help that I play in "fusion geek" position!

The first time was when my wife was running resume/typing service out of our home. I had a lovely custom-made jumbo flat top with figured maple body and abalone butterflies inlaid on the headstock and for position markers.

One of her customers came in and picked it up and started playing some lame campfire **** on it.

I killed him.

The second time was right after I got my Precision. I got out of my car at the rehearsal site and immediately heard this fat, deep, present bass line coming from inside. Our lead player had a thing for Ps, and he couldn't' resist picking it up. He'd been after me to get a P for quite a while. His wife was there and she said, "see, you should have asked him first!" He just gave me a $&!@ eating grin and kept on.

I thought it was cool: immediate validation.

I wouldn't think of handling, much less playing, someone else's instrument without asking first, and I expect others to show me the same courtesy.

I've loaned basses and rigs to friends, and I let others play through my rig if we're hosting a jam (as long as they're respectful and responsible), but no one gets to use my gear or play my basses without my prior consent.

If it's someone I know and trust, it's not a big deal. If it's someone I don't know, then I wouldn't be too happy. I've been playing 18 years and I can only remember an occasion or two when that happened, though.

The real question is this - are you mad because someone is playing your bass, or are you mad because they are a better bass player than you? If a guitarist who has hardly touched a bass can play better than you, then it might be time to schedule more practice time.....

Hands off the bass people. I MIGHT let you try it out while I watch you. Otherwise forget it. Keep at least 10 feet away from my instrument. If I put a nick in it - I'll hate it, but I know it was my fault. If someone else did it I would be seriously upset. If somebody messed with my bass when I'm not around - people are going to hear about it. I'll be on the hunt for that person for sure. I'll break both their arms then I'll really hurt them! :D:eyebrow:

I don't mind other bandmates use my bass as much as they want, besides the tenor Sax player, I hate his atitude he worships himself and may break it because only by touching it he'll say he's a better player than me.

Actually he's so annoying that he changed my EQ couple of times during shows and reharsals! And one time during reharsal he turned of my amp because he didn't like my line.
