I would like to apply for a steward position in said union.

I do tend to like to explore topics of interest to me and one means is to defend a side that's less supported. A topic is more thoroughly discussed when there are competing opinions involved.

I suppose that this is what developed in my social skills where "small talk" should have been.

It sure seems like it. Even with the most, simplistic threads like "Bass is good" will get a handful of paid TB members to say something like ". . .bassists are just frustrated guitarist. . . "

Just frustrating and kind of confusing.

It's a free-for-all. This isn't the only forum with the same type of atmosphere.
