Is it the bass presets?

I work with a pro sound guy who also plays drums in our band for kicks. In spite of the fact that he had gotten my sound great in the past, I just helped him load in/out of a stadium level gig. All sounded great - exceptional even - except the mushy bass. I missed sound check. I am now suspecting "presets" in the new board as the "mush" is common.

Here's a professional's quote from the comments section of the manufacturer's site: "I'll elaborate on just 1 of the presets, Bass 1...The comp was generally too heavy handed (for a typical DI or amp output DI signal) and squashed the whole thing instead of just leveling out the dynamics, but a simple press of the fat channel select for the bass channel, and a slight adjustment with the threshold would clean that right up. Very intuitive, and quickly..."

So, is the Bass preset modeling some old POS 1959 bass pickup through a old cab? I know we'll be having a conversation about it.

Well if the guy is depending on the pre sets on a studiolive then he isn't that great a soundman. Those are good for a starting point but you have to tweak them. There is also at least 3 or 4 bass presets IIRC. The bass player might have been sending him a crappy tone so it was garbage in and garbage out.

Sorry I missed some details. Stingray thru GK.... sounded spectacular on stage... later in the show I heard some slapping cut through, but it may have been the stage sound cutting through the PA mix. DI out the back of the head. Presonus board - new to him in the past few months. I saw the compression presets showing on the IPAD later in the show. Drums were each mic'd and clear, 2 clear guitars that were not competing in the bass sonic space (often this seems to acompany mushy bass, but not in this case). Am wondering if he missed the bass on sound check or heard stage bass sound w/ the PA
