Is It The NFLs Responsibilty?

To correct one false impression: The NFL can not treat its players as "at will" employees. They are covered/protected by a union and CBA rules.

So the union, the NFLPA, is going to sue the NFL for violation of due process under the CBA rules that the NFL agreed to. But the NFL players, who fund & control the NFLPA, can put an end to the NFLPA protection of Ray Rice. If they want to. Perhaps somebody needs to start talking to the players about who they choose to support.

Regarding the Rice marriage. This is just me, but I have to think that money, and lots of it, was the reason for the marriage between Ray & Janay. Look at the position she was in: You don't want to go to jail? You to marry me to keep my mouth shut? OK, here's what it's going to cost you: X% of your salary. You keep your hands off me. Touch me and you go straight to jail and I get ALL your money.

I know that I would be very tempted to act in the manner I just described.

The real problem for the NFL: Billions of $$$$. If fans start pressuring the sponsors, and the sponsors pull their $$, how will the teams pay the players, which by contract they HAVE to do, regardless of whether or not the sponsors are sending their checks in.

It's a mess.

You're SO cynical. Me too.

Interesting take. BUT... There's been representatives from women's groups on CNN and they haven't mentioned greed as Janay's motivation... It's low self esteem. She is too broken to realize she could extort or simply up and leave. I hadn't considered extortion, I want believe it's true love. (Cue "Stand By Your Man")

The most likely explanation, especially considering the timing of the marriage (right after charges are filed), is that she married him so that she would be immune from testifying against him. It's called Spousal Privilege.

In New Jersey, there is an exception to the spousal immunity rule for criminal prosecutions in which the accused is charged with an offense against the spouse. See Invalid Link Removed.

None of these women's groups or Yahoo posters know anything about this couple so maybe they should mind they own dayum business. Quite possibly she just loves the man and they had one horrible night in New Jersey that the world was privileged to see. Why folks have to further drag her name through the mud by calling her a gold digger or saying she has self-esteem issues I have no idea

OK. On the other hand, apparently a good number of women in abusive relationships are living out the pattern created by the template of abusive relationships from their childhood. It's what they grew up with and know as "normal." Some abusers are also carrying out what they "learned" from what they experienced in childhood - a practical example of "the sins of the father being carried to the 7th generation." The same occurs in families of drug and alcohol abusers, though there could be more of a factor of physiological factors involved in those cases (nature vs. nurture).

All those things are very true, and they should be addressed I agree with you. My only issue is people on message boards judging this poor girl's motivations, not knowing jack about her

EDIT: not that I'm surprised, mind you. The internet is a terrible, terrible place :D

Hi All,

I just would like to clarify a few things that I said in my earlier post, and expand on things a bit, too.

1) I did not say that Janay HAD decided to keep her mouth shut for money, only that she had the opportunity to do so.

2) I further stated that, in her shoes, I would have been very tempted to use that power to my advantage.

3) To support my supposition, notice that, at least on the news, Janay's focus was on the money that Ray would NOT be receiving as a result of his suspension. Nothing about due process, nothing along the lines of "he's been sufficiently penalized and embarrassed already", nothing about it being the first time he has treated in her in that manner.

4) I would like to see a change to the Spousal Privilege laws. Domestic abuse, against spouse, children, other family members, that occurs BEFORE the marriage should not be covered by Privilege. A very narrow exemption to the Privilege. Such a change would prevent the situation we have now.

As I noted in my prior post, such an exception already exists in New Jersey.

Edit: to clarify, the exception that currently exists is even broader than what you propose, because it states that the spousal privilege does not apply where "the accused is charged with an offense against the spouse, a child of the accused or of the spouse ...."

Gold digger or not, love or no love, it's simply stupid for a woman to stay with a man who would do that to her.

I hear you. I would not want to let people know my wife beat me up either. :D

Hahahahhahahaha!

Yes my wife has beat me up a couple of times. I used to play a little rope-a-dope and just let her get out whatever anger she is feeling at the time. "The bloom of youth" - 20 - is too young to get married. We have had some fights early in our marriage; fortunately no one ever got seriously injured. And I pretty much never did anything other than to shove her onto the bed to ensure that she wouldn't actually get hurt; however, had she bounced off and busted her head open on the side of the nightstand, we could be talking about a whole different story!

Violence is never the answer, kids
