Is it the strings that effect the sound? I want my bass to have more of a metallic sound, should i get new fender strings for it?

Yes strings affect the sound. Not as much as the pups, but they do the final sound tweak. For yummy metallic sound rotosound swing66 are excellent choice. I think they do that better then any other strings. If you dont llike their rougher then average feel, perhaps ghs stanless strings as another good choice imo
new ernie balls are great strings. they sound very bright mark hoppus of blink 182 uses brand new ernie balls he changes them after like 3 shows. He likes brand new strings hes lucky hes endorsed by them... I prefer old dead ernie balls. they are perfect for my sound I like a bright sound but not overly twangy.
