is it worth it - will this make a drastic difference

alright so i picked up one of those peavy grinds a while back. i was just lookin for something fretted to thump on for a break from my 6 string fretless. for 350 bucks it seemed like a pretty decent little bass. i'm not really too fond of the rose wood fretboard it has and electronics seem a little shoddy, but it's neck thru and made of mostly decent woods. in short im pretty happy with it dollar for dollar. it has decent tone. there in is where the problem lies though. i like the way it plays a lot, but i don't want decent tone i want kick ass tone. i want really good tone.

do you guys think slapping a set of bartolinis and an active preamp inside this thing will make a good enough difference in tone. how much of tone do you feel comes from the pickups and how much from the wood and the bass itself and then how much from the strings? is it going to be worth it throw some awesome pickups in this thing.

I would try adding the pickups or pre amp then if you are still not happy add the other then you know what you have. It could be that Just changing out the pups will make enough of a difference and you won't need to add the pre. Or the other way around. If you just add a good pre it might be enough to make it sound really good and save you some cash too. Just my 2 cents worth and as usual YMMV . And all opinions are just that one persons view of something so take it for what it may be worth.

I am interested in knowing what you did, and whith what results.
As you might have guessed, I am in the same situation : I got that bass and am kind of happy with it - after an extensive set-up- but I wondering how better it would sound with different electronic. My prefered option would be, however, to keep it passive and only change the pick-ups, but I am not sure if it would be worth it.

If you want to keep it passive and still get a lot of tone, the emg hz line may be what you're looking for. A lot of people complain about a hi-fi spacy kinda sound but they have quite a bit of tone to them. And I for one like that "hi-fi" sound.

Yep, anytime, also though, you might try some different strings to compliment the pickups. I suggest earnie ball slinky or dean markley cryogenic lines. Earnies sound great along with emg's. You can pick up a couple sets for like 40 bucks at musiciansfriend. Cheap addition of a little extra tone.
