It might have caused a slip dip in sales for a quarter, but Ken Smith is so popular in Urban Gospel and r&b that I do not think the loss of a studio player and a fusion/jazz virtuoso hurt them in the long run at all.

It might have caused a slip dip in sales for a quarter, but Ken Smith is so popular in Urban Gospel and r&b that I do not think the loss of a studio player and a fusion/jazz virtuoso hurt them in the long run at all.
I'm not sure what that bass is, but I am sure of one thing-I'M BUYING THAT CD!!!! THAT IS COOL!!!!!
On a side note, I preferred John's Ken Smith tone over his Yamaha.

For what it's worth, if the mid controls on the JP Sig are anything like those on the old TRB5/TRB6 from the 1990's, they have a midrange setting that focuses on the high mids that can approximate, but not imitate the Ken Smith/Cirrus sound.
He does play a Music Man
I wouldn't be surprised if that MM just happened to be in the studio at that time. Heck, I'm sure somewhere in his arsenal, Patitucci probably has a beat up Fender Jazz or P as well. However we all know he's a Yamaha guy.

That's definitely a Yamaha. Given JP's strong association with Yamaha, I'll bet its a customized prototype of some sort. I'll agree a previous comment: I kinda preferred JP's tone with the Ken Smith 6 rather than his Yamaha 6's. His Smith seemed to have dead and hot spots, which kind of added some old school flavor to his solos. His Yams don't seem to suffer from that; which is probably what a player with JP's virtuosity would likely cleave to. But I suppose that's a matter of preference.
So since this thread has started, has anyone spotted this mystery Yamaha anywhere else? I'm pretty curious. Looks like a BB model with a Patitucci signature model twist. Maybe he wanted a little Fender-ish mojo so they whipped this model together for him?
Quite wrong .. he played Ken Smith before Yamaha and a Sadowsky NYC in the infamous instructional video shot at the beginning of the nineties ...
I can't believe I didn't recognize that bass. It's a Music Man Sabre. An awesome bass with killer tone!!!
