I got a Squier Deluxe Active Jazz 5 for Christmas (I LOVE my wife!), and it's a great bass. Would I gig out with it? Absolutely, and I have- three times so far. I plan on modifying it to better suit my needs, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I did have to lower the saddles some, but I haven't had time to do a proper setup.
Some of the Squier Affinity Series instruments are dodgy, with inferior hardware, but if it is a Squier Standard, they're decent, giggable basses.
I second Eric618 on the SX basses. They're really good as well, though every one I've had, I've had to do a setup on right out of the box. Overall, they kick the snot out of the Affinity Series, and many Standard series Squiers as well. I've had two of them so far, and I like them.
Good luck on whatever choice you make!
