Double Bass Is the G string dead or is this a dead spot?

Hi guys, I am new to upright and my NS EU6 came with the original strings and lately I noticed that the G string is totally dead from the 7th note and beyond. Up until the 5th , it's not so horrible.

Since I have only been play up until the 5th (high C) it wasnt a big deal and I didnt really notice it too much but lately it's starting to bug me.

I've had dead spots on an electric bass but none were more than a fret/note. I re-installed the G strings but it hasnt made any difference.

Is this a dead spot (spots) or is the string toast? Or do strings eventually just end up with little sustain as I play it more and more?

If it is a matter of the string, should I just ditch the originals and just get an entire new set or just play the crap out of it till all of them eventually die?

If I do the above, will it hinder my progress?

Thanks for all information in advance.
