I just started learning the bass about 4 months ago. My first bass was the ibanez k5 as i loved its and tone compared to the other basses in the shop. However, on the site I have seen so many haters of this bass. Is it really that bad? Did I just waste my money???

My guess is that many don't like the K5 because it is the Fieldy Signature model, and Fieldy gets no respect on TB.
I'm sure the bass itself is as good as any other Ibanez in that price range.
Take it from me, trust your ears and hands. You will save a whole lot of money if you do that instead of listening to other people.

If you like playing it and it sounds good, then you didn't waste your money. I don't know about resale value or anything like that, but if it holds your interest at the beginning stages of learning, then you shouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks of the bass.
Hey. Thanks a lot. Just another question. Since i'm a beginner, do you think a multi-effects like a me-20b is fine or should i go for the seperate pedals?

Especially if you're a beginner. I made that mistake ages ago on guitar and became way too dependent on delay, flange and chorus. If you're recording a song and want to give it a little something extra that's fine but if you're just learning to play, ditch the effects.
I discovered that they were holding me back - I wasn't really advancing my playing on a technical level, instead of becoming a better guitarist I was becoming a better knob twiddler, lol.

I'd just start collecting pedals one at a time, but that's just me. Get good pedals with true bypass, or invest a small amount in a Barge Concepts effect loop pedal to preserve your clean tone.
My admittedly limited experience with the multi-effect units is that they can have some pretty good tones, but surprisingly can be pretty spiky volume-wise: this tone is too quiet, that one too loud, etc. Individual pedals are a bit more predictable and controllable IME.
However perhaps to Relayer's point, I didn't but my first effect until I had already been playing bass for 16 years, gigging seriously for 10, so by luck of the draw I guess I followed his advice. But I would also say that my practice regimen and playing have improved more since I bought that pedal (a HAZ MuTron III+ re-issue) although that may be just that I have gotten older and more disciplined and focused in general with age. I guess what I mean is that buying effects now doesn't mean you have to sacrifice learning to play better and better. Besides, on bass only about 5 - 10% of what I play is effected, so having a solid clean tone is a must, and also the reason I recommend true by pass pedals or, even better, a pedal that lets you put all your effects into a selectable loop.
yeah that bass is nice, it will take you a loooong way. good tones w/active eq, nice woods, super comfortable to play, don't hate the haters people, they're only doing thier jarbs!
there are a lot of hate-ers on this site ..there should be a thread on the different types of hate-ers on here...for example one time i posted an item for sale then right away someone posted that i was breaking some sort of rules and he was telling me nicely and that if a moderator sees it they will not be as nice and the hate-er of course was wrong and not even a member for as long as i was...yeah so try to weed out the hate-ers
No, it's a very nice bass with great features. They don't hate the bass, they hate the person whose name is attached to it. I'm amongst them - it's way too nice a bass for Fieldy to abuse like that

The only thing that would discourage me is the Fieldy K5 inlay.

I agree with Relayer, stay effect free for now. When you do make a move to effects though, I think multi-fx isn't such a bad idea. I have an ME-50B, which I don't really like at all any more but it's given me a good idea of what sort of stompboxes I want to get when I can afford them. So even if you get a crappy multi-fx, it'll serve as a learning tool I guess!
Multi-fx is a good idea so you can mess around and see what you like and plenty are usable. Or you can then get individual pedals of the fx you really like.

k5 is an excellent bass. Some may prefer pther pups or preamps. But is a fine bass.
For effects the most useful to me as newbie was: Comp, sustainer, overdrive, phaser, bass wah. i later became constant overdrive user as main effect. Multi effects if you can find one that has suitable version of your fave effects. Is best way to go imo. These also allow for excellent signal to mixers and recorders. Just create your ready for recording tone with the processor. Seperates are lot more expensive and are only better when you cant find a processor with suitable version of the desired effect. Like keyboard synthesizers, the presets on multi effect units are mostly useless. Some being suitable for tweaking and growing your own versions from. The rest just for overwriting with something better for you. Boosting the output level above the preset is a basic key to improving the sound on all multi effect pedals Ive tried with no exceptions. I prefer upper end zooms, line6 makes some nice ones to. Havent been impressed by Boss, or Digitech multis even though they have some very nice seperate pedals.

Don't let the inabilities of the signature artist detract from the bass in any way. IMHO Fieldy can do serious dis-service to a kazoo but Ibanez still builds great basses so just enjoy your K5 which is a very good instrument.

Meh this site is bad for trends like this. No doubt because Fieldy doesn't play Jamerson licks and drags $3000+ of gear to crappy backyard BBQ gigs whilst hiding his beer belly behind a Hawaiian shirt he gets an unfair rap on this site. Who knows why. He plays the bass, he plays it differently to other people, as did Jaco, Jamerson and all those other people during their timeframe. However as much as these people were innovators in the 1960s and 1970s they somehow set the standard by which all other bass playing will be judged regardless of the transition of time since then. Boring attitude much?
It pretty much sucks that you are being actively put off an instrument you paid for by the Nazi-ism of some quarters of this forum. As bassists we have to admit that we are basically an inaudible sub-species of guitarists (as viewed as everybody other than other bassists, who would rather banter all day about flatwound vs roundwound or some other irrelevent junk), and whilst it makes us a precocious breed of vicious little nazis we are small fry in the real world. Fieldy (and his rad K5) is actually succeeding at something 99% of the forum members here at failing at.
Enjoy your bass and learn not to listen too closely to this forum.
