Is the Mac world slowly taking over?

I work on a university campus and it was reported yesterday that over 25% of campus uses macs (students & faculty/staff).
Much higher than I thought!

Can't quote numbers, but Macs have been more popular in the education sector for years.
That's a relatively small group compared to the private, business/corporate & governmental communities, where PCs have always had an overwhelming popularity.

If my university has Macs, they're well hidden. Might be some wherever the film students have classes.
Personally, I won't abandon PC's until Macs have a greater level of customization options. And as many sweet games.

True, and I've known this for years, but I was very surprised by the percentage reported. I expected it to be in the 10% or slightly more range.
Most of the machines on campus are PC. All of our work related computers are, accept our division Director's computer.
In the darkroom on campus, though the entire lab is Mac, as are any of the video art, computer art, and most of the sound related disciplines. All of the computer labs and clusters throughout the rest of the university are all PC though. Personal use is really high for macs though. When I walk through the food court at the student center, most of what you see is Mac, and the large study facility at our library usually is a good place to spot a bunch of them too.
I ended up buying a PC laptop about 3 years ago when I was taking classes again. I was having problems with my professors accessing my work, even though I was sending it to them as word or PDF files and I found that having a PC allayed any problems.
In a perfect world, maybe, but open source has a much longer way to go in terms of development, scope, and market consumer awareness.
What Apple has going for it is that their media presence is much, much higher than its market presence.
Apple is getting more popular but it won't kill the PC.
At my uni it seems that the majority of lecturers run macs however the majority of computers for student use are PCs(although the chemistry area seems to have only Macs for some reason).

I really think whichever computer you like is just what you're used to. And a lesser number of the population is used to Macs.
Apple has a deal with colleges and schools to get their computers in. It's a marketing ploy. They thought if the students got used to using a Mac, they'd ask their parents for one. And they'd grow up to be Mac users.
The percentage of Mac users to PC users among my friends and coworkers is about 95% Mac and 5% PC. But most of my friends are artists, and I work in advertising and film editing. The only people I know who are PC users are my family and they keep asking me questions about how to fix their PC. And I'm like what, do I look like a friggin Help Desk?
I don't think Mac will take over where PCs are, but I don't think PCs will ever take over where Macs are (in the creative-type jobs).

Safari has had tabbed browsing for a while.
I love my macs and don't forsee me buying a PC ever again, but I don't think mac will ever take over PC, nor do I really want them to.

Macs are fine machines and here to stay, but they long ago lost the commercial battle. It's a PC world and there are no signs that this is about to change. A slight increase in usage on college campus means nothing in the overall world sales of computers.
Macs have some specific and some not-specific uses, and happy fans. But in the overall picture, they're not a force in the computer world other than coming up with a cool idea now and then - which immediately migrates to the PC World.
But in ANY business I can think of, would I tailor my products to serve 6% of the total market??? Not on yer tintype, chester!
Unless I were going to specialize ONLY in products for that market segment, fuhgeddaboudit.

Figured, it probably did when I was using it as well, I just didn't see the option. I still like firefox better, it runs faster.

I have 3 computers.
I have an old lumbering Dell desktop which I use as a storage machine for music, and for school and office work. Nothing fancy, and it runs on XP.
I got a Sony VAIO laptop thats running Vista, and completely tricked out with so much hardware it'll outprocess anything. Its mostly for gaming and I carry it around everywhere. I like running CoD4 on maximum settings without any lag at all
It crashed once due to user error (I made a boo boo reconfiguring my machine and I accidently deleted the bootfiles, don't ask me how I did it...)
I just got a Macbook Air laptop for music stuff. I don't like it much at all and much prefer my Sony. I got the Air about a week after its release and I keep having to bring it to the Apple Store because it crashed once (no idea how, I never messed with anything) and then again when the keyboard and mouse stopped being read by the computer and I couldn't work it. Now it keeps randomly splitting my computer into 6 desktops or closing out programs on me without me doing anything. Even my Mac using friends how no idea whats up with this thing (they tried telling me that the program was still open, but they couldn't find it running anywhere...)
I go to college in NYC and Mac's are very popular here. Everyone has a PC at home at least, but a lot of the people who bring their computer to school have a Mac. I find that, to them, its more of a subculture icon then a tool. Its cool to own a mac, and you got to show'em if you got them. Mind you they all had their parents buy these computers for them...

.I'm growing more and more fond of Linux. I'm growing more and more sick of windows and mac.
We have a higher concentration of Macs here at Mizzou, but it's mostly because we have the premier Journalism school in the country and they MAKE their students by Macs. The overwhelming majority of computers on campus are PCs (Mostly dells).
Macs have been around in the education sector for a while. I remember using an old Apple that ran off of like 5 and half inch floppy disks. Those were the days.
