There are some contemporary music programs such as Berklee or Humber College in Toronto that teach funk.

I dunno, the question made sense to me... I think.
There's a big difference, IMO, between "funk" and just learning Bootsy licks.
Probably because you don't need a professor to teach you how to play pop music...
I'm not talking about performance studies. However, since we're on the subject of performance, you don't need a professor to teach you how to play classical music either.

It's also conceivable that a person could become a self-educated doctor, lawyer, or particle physicist.
Teaching is only a necessity when supply isn't meeting demand quickly enough, or when the law requires it.

Berklee has classes that deal with Funk Bass and Funk Styles, I'm sure.
The University of Miami has a Tower Of Power Ensemble and a Funk/Fusion Ensemble
Belmont is a Commercial Electric Bass program so we can't not teach it. I use Slap It!, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Victor's and Stanley's transcription books, Bill Dickens books and videos,Chuck Rainey, Anthony Jackson and Rocco Prestia transcriptions, etc. We don't have a dedicated Funk Ensemble (that's a good idea-I will work on that), but I've had players like Bob Babbitt, Keith Horne and Victor Wooten teach Master Classes there.
Since it's a Commercial Electric Bass School I would assume Musician's Institute has Funk Style Classes as well. The last time I looked in their catalog it was there.
Off the top of my head those are some answers....
Of course, that's just the style. How "funky" you make it is up to the player, IMO.

I didn't say that learning to play classical music didn't require a teacher (I think that learning it properly does), just that the teacher doesn't have to be a professor (I haven't come across many performance teachers who have that particular title).
I think that pretty much sums it up - aspects of the style in question (as well as the history and details regarding the social context of the style) can be taught, but the feel part is mostly up to the player. I figure you could substitute the word "funky" in the above sentence with any number of other words relating directly to a musical style and the sentence would remain valid.

Yes, absolutely. Well, maybe not, but possibly. Could be, might be very likely. But I doubt it, really. But hey, why not.
When I went to Berklee, I think there were little group classes or "labs" where you would go and learn genres and reading in that style. These might have been remedial based on your rating, I'm not sure. Funk bass lab, raggae bass lab, etc.

I used to turn on Jerry Springer every once in a while even though it was like someone was sticking an icepick in my brain, too.
When a form becomes established and common it becomes teachable to a 6 year old, anywhere. See youtube for various 6 year olds playing various established forms.
