I picked up the Bass-tards teal colored one, I’ll put up pics once I get back home from a business trip.

on contacting Dario, I reached out via Facebook first then email, he responded in about a day. He’s pretty busy with work he said, he’s also making a new pickup/pre amp set for new builds. I asked if I could buy them for my Octave and he said once he catches up on orders. Don’t think he’s selling those to just anyone though.

Re Vid above. I had a VM PJ bass and the bridge PU sounded just like it. A jazz bass will get u their too, then use ur technique for flavour.

I modified a U.S. Spector bolt-on bass with mahogany body with Rautia multi coil pickups And a lusithand double special preamp . It really came out great! Sounds very similar to my Wal 5 string !

Maybe this was already mentioned, but...

Actually yes, there's a small company, I think a one man operation called Octave Basses. He does one for one Wal clones for around $3500 a pop and they look great. I've actually been considering one, because I'd love to have something with that sound in my collection, but I would never invest the amount required for a genuine wall, and I couldn't deal with the wait required.

True to a degree, but for 1/3 of the cost of a real one, I’m not sure what else we expect people to do. There is a market for these at a lower price point, because Wals have such a sought after sound. It’s a bummer that the real things have become the instruments for the rich!

My personal preference would be for Octave to deviate from the look of the Wal somehow, to differentiate his instruments. If the pickups and pre have the right tone, I think the market would be open to a different looking bass. At least there’s an option for those that can’t afford 10k+ on a single guitar.

Build time waitlist backlog is also a concern. Price aside waiting (I think) 3-4 years from WAL for delivery is a huge drawback. I’ve looked around for alternatives as a result of the backlog like I’m sure many people have when considering just price alone.

This is my Wal mk3 - inspired 5 string fretless. Ash body, maple/sapele neck, Bartolini quad coil MM pickup, 3-band parametric EQ preamp from Ibanez EHB, 4 position coil switch (neck coil/series/parallel/bridge coil). And transformer-driven XLR out with phantom power feature.

You need special pickups. Rautia is closed.
Maybe you can ask Bert Gerecht in germany for bis "Walbucker". But I don't know how they are wired. You need them wired as humbuckers in a row per string.

I’m interested in approximating the wal sound, but have my own aesthetic and ergonomic preferences. I’m having Cliff Bordwell build me a 30” bass under 7 pounds with turner pickups and underhill preamp. It’ll be ready to ship in a few weeks.

I'm probably a year or two from being able to order something with these electronics. It's great that we're starting to have more options. A Wal will be unobtanium for me until my kids are grown and out of college.

Good friend got in touch end of September, asking if I'd make the introductions between him and a local builder.

When I saw his body shape sketch I was only too happy to hook them up 10 weeks later John took possession of this beauty

Martin Herrick did the multi coil pickups and the NFP MKII preamp came from Lusithand . Won't hear it played in anger until start of Feb so I'm counting the days

My good friend (and extraordinary bassist) Barend Tromp made a demo video.
I think sound wise it comes pretty close to my original MK1, is has a wider frequency range compared to Wal but the character definitely is there.
