Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

I’m really happy with my bbp35. One thing i notice is the filter doesn’t do much until the last 10% of it. I am playing on a neo soul record and found a nice tone favoring the front pickup a little with the filter around 80% off.

The strings I am using are my trusty DRs. I went with the pure blues. They are nice but not blowing my mind. I wasn’t a fan of the daddarios that came on the bass.

So I ordered a 5 string set of ti flats. I love these strings but have not played the 5 string set. Just feels like this bass may be amazing with flats the way it is so wide open in the high end. I am hoping the notes stay articulate in the upper frets and I may be in business.

The difference in clank/highs between 80% and 70% in the filter (tone knob) is so dramatic in the studio that I had to make the move.

Interested if any of you all went down this path.
I did go down that path. The 5 string set is fabulous but it takes a while for the B string to break in. I had the set on for a couple of weeks and gave up on the B string and took the set off. I think it might just be that I didn’t play the set enough, because when I put it back on for one more try and playef it a couple of days the B string was amazing. I have it strung thru-body with the pointed saddle up on the B string, round side up for the others. Like you, I’ve found that I roll more tone off of that pickup than usual for split Ps.

The 5 string set of TI flats is almost double the cost of the 4 string set. Worth it to me.

Some flats players like a Dunlop set on that bass too. I have a set of those but don’t want to change anything right now.

Let us know how you like the TI’s. I’m very interested in flats on my BBP34 even though I usually get tired of flats on any bass after a while. I wish I didn’t. 😕
So far so good. As stated the low b is pretty big but the set sounds so balanced and they are not even broken in yet.

The bass feels amazing to play with the TIs. I am a big TI fan so I may not the the best reference but I’ve always used their 4 string sets. I think they work great on the BBP because it has a lot of inherent low end and the TIs get that under control and tighten it up a little bit

Hello,

Need your input particularly those who have experience changing tuners on their BB434.

Looking to change between the Hipshot ultralites or Gotoh res-o-lite.

Hipshot has 1/2” and 3/8 option and this gotoh as far as I know are 3/8”.

According to gemini, Bb434 has 14mm holes, but I’m not sure how accurate that info is.

Does this mean I don’t need to buy other bushing?

I’m skeptical. BB234 has 1/2 tuners. BB734a has 1/2 tuners. I don’t have a 434, but picture of 434 headstock on SW looks like 1/2 tuners to me. And those are gonna have a hole bigger than 14mm with the needed bushing thickness.

Hipshot licensed 1/2 need a 16mm hole, Hipshot USA 1/2 need 17.5mm. Indonesian made basses likely have 18mm. The USA you can bulk up with some tape, or Hipshot sells adapters for both models to fit 18mm (not interchangeable sadly. )

The bushings on Hipshot are screw on, not press in, so you’ll need new bushings anyway. But they come with the tuner, so no extra purchase needed.

I’m not aware of 1/2 Gotoh tuners, so can’t help with those.

I’m thinking the query maybe looked at some older model or at the TRBX line which do have 3/8 tuners.

I just got my bass as my brother borrowed it. Anyway, I took off one tuner of my BB434 and measured the hole. I don’t have a caliper but this is what I have. It looks 18mm or 17.6mm(if I should have edged the ruler more). Just posting this here as well for reference

Depending on USA or licensed, you’ll probably need something from this page:

I’m in for a number if I can . I currently have two BB414s and two 734a’s . I had several early neck throughs I wish I had kept but they were heavy to the extreme . Glad to see there’s a BB club . Great basses
Not in the few years I’ve followed this club have I ever seen a number issued, but if you need to hear it from someone, you’re totally “in” 😁

Just a quick report on the Thomastik JR344 Jazz Rounds I have put on my 734. So happy! 🥰 Perfect length for installlling through the body. A comfortable 2 1/2 winds on the G string, which is the only one I didn't cut. Silk ends are perfectly positioned between saddle and tuner (E) or string retainer. I was a little concerned about the very low tension I had read about over here... but no. In this respect, they feel a lot like regular DR Sunbeams. Comfortable string height with no buzzing anywhere, as long as you attack them halfway civilized. Finger feeling also very similar to the Sunbeams.
As far I can tell by now, the tone is just what I have been looking for. Mids, mids and more beautiful mids. Punch and definition. Insanely even across the board. You know, I don't want to fiddle with the knobs to find a sound I like. With the stock XLs, I would have used the "P only" setting, but with the TIs I have the tone I love with the PJ, passive, and the tone knob at the notch.
Are they worth the 60 € I paid? Yessss! Would I have been as happy with a set of Sunbeams? Maybe. But do these have the green silks by which everyone will recognize what I'm playing? 😳😅

Hello,

I have a doubt regarding "the measure" of the truss rod. I had learned (I even have the book by John Carruthers) that, setting a capo on the first fret and pressing down the string where the neck joins the body, the string heigh at around the 7th fret should be 0.15 for bass and 0.10 for guitar.

Today, I took my Yamaha BBP34 from my luthier and it plays like a dream. When I took it, his assistant told me that the adjustment was horrible. I agreed that he could adjust it. I measured and the strings heigh is around 1.5 mm each string (1/16") and the truss road (measured with the capo) is at 0.10". The assistant is a guitarist, but I cannot say anything bad. My Yamaha plays now incredibly well and it does not have any fret buzz. Do you think I should keep it like that or it may create a problem?

Finally changed the hardwares of my BB434.

Following my previous post, I got the Gotoh instead. Bought a seperate bushing that would make the tuner snug and fit on the 17.6mm hole of my bass. Fits like a glove without any wiggle or need to add tape.

I installed the following:
-Gotoh GB707 Tuners
-Dunlop Straplok
-Guyker 3-string tree retainer
-Hipshot B Style FM1 Bridge
-Clear jazz style tone knobs
