Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

Finally changed the hardwares of my BB434.

Following my previous post, I got the Gotoh instead. Bought a seperate bushing that would make the tuner snug and fit on the 17.6mm hole of my bass. Fits like a glove without any wiggle or need to add tape.

I installed the following:
-Gotoh GB707 Tuners
-Dunlop Straplok
-Guyker 3-string tree retainer
-Hipshot B Style FM1 Bridge
-Clear jazz style tone knobs

I love this. Did the tuners reduce weight? I keep going back and forth on “upgrading” my 735 tuners…

Looks great!
What type of bushings did you use? Can you provide a link?
Thanks!

I got this one. The spec is very accurate. Almost went for the US ultralites but theirs have 17.5mm that's why some folks wrapped tape.

I can confirm the BB434/435 has 17.6mm tuner holes after measuring it. No wiggle room when I installed it, and you screw the tuner bolt to the bushing which makes it more secure and tight. Hope this helps!

Hello,

I have a doubt regarding "the measure" of the truss rod. I had learned (I even have the book by John Carruthers) that, setting a capo on the first fret and pressing down the string where the neck joins the body, the string heigh at around the 7th fret should be 0.15 for bass and 0.10 for guitar.

Today, I took my Yamaha BBP34 from my luthier and it plays like a dream. When I took it, his assistant told me that the adjustment was horrible. I agreed that he could adjust it. I measured and the strings heigh is around 1.5 mm each string (1/16") and the truss road (measured with the capo) is at 0.10". The assistant is a guitarist, but I cannot say anything bad. My Yamaha plays now incredibly well and it does not have any fret buzz. Do you think I should keep it like that or it may create a problem?
I assume you mean 0.010", 0.10" would be very high. That's about where I keep mine. And if it works for you, then it's fine! Neck relief isn't a hard and fast rule.

So, you used 2 sets of bushings? Looks like the press-in type and also the threaded type that (I think) are used for the 707s. (?)

Just 1 set of bushing. The one that came with the 707 was too small so I did not use it at all hence the 17.6mm bushing I bought seperately.

Was it drop-in or did you need to do any drilling?
I drilled 2 new holes and covered the original holes. The original is a 2 string retainer and only had one screw.

Nice! I like the clear pg. How was it in terms of thickness? Did it fit nice under the little black protection plastic of the truss rod? Where did you order it from?

It’s the same as the original one. I sent my original to pickguard.co.uk

They matched it to the original and cut accurately. In fact I have 3 pg alread. Amin and a tort too

I’m a week in and a few sessions deep with the Yamaha and the TIs and I am incredibly impressed with the sound. I like both pickups on with the tone rolled off about halfway as my go to sound, but I love that I can favor the front pickup. I listed my amazing fender precision in the classifieds to see if someone wants a US made 4. Im back to 5 strings now mainly and the Yamaha does an amazing version of the p bass tone.

Been running the Yamaha into the JHS colourbox, which is a perfect fit for it since it has an eq and adds a little drive. I do small boosts to the low and high, and cut the mids a little. Saturate a little through the transformers and its perfection. The TIs are bright and clear for flats, so the slap tone is amazing without needing rounds. I don’t slap a lot but I throw in string pops as accents and it sits perfectly without sounding harsh or sticking out to me.

Great combo- A+ for me. The Yamaha is a fairly bright sounding bass so the TI flats control that brightness a little bit without removing it entirely. And of course they feel incredible under the hands for anyone who plays with a light touch.

The B string is still breaking in. It is very fat but lacking a little in clarity but I’m noticing that improving each use. TI has just a unique approach to making strings , but it works so well

I’ve really been enjoying the BB735a, haven’t played my German Sadowsky VJ5 on a gig since getting the Yamaha a month ago. Decided to take it to a local luthier to push the extra few percent out of it without upgrading any parts. Not that there was anything wrong with the Bass, it’s an incredible instrument for a production model, kicks way above the competition that I’ve used in my opinion, (Fender Player, Sadowsky Metroexpress, Fender USA too). I don’t think anything on this Bass needs changing as far as hardware or electronics, but I just wanted a finesse of a few things.

He smoothed the fret ends, rolled the edges of the fingerboard a little, realigned the nut which was slightly off apparently (I hadn’t noticed). There was excess glue under the nut that he scraped off and reset it in place. Oiled the fingerboard with his own oil and wax concoction, tweaked my setup on the bridge radius and set the pickup height. Neck was fine at the .3mm relief I set. This Bass plays and sounds like a dream.

Hello! What's the current best resource for getting the Yamaha speed knobs, part number CB807761 ? I have a fretless BB3000AF that is receiving a new/replacement preamp, and with it hopefully those knobs and a brass indexer like my fretted BB3000 has. I received it with an Aguilar installed, then tried the John East Uni, but the cavity is just so small that the Uni was really cramped in there, and felt like overkill. I'm trying a Nordstrand 2-band now, and want the OG knobs to complete the look! Thanks all!
