Is there an app that will transcribe what I play?

transcribe! by seventh string seems to work with recordings, and doesn't seem to have a mic function to record me playing bass and then transcribe that...

Interesting workaround for a single instrument at a time. Any idea how accurate this is given a challenging, but not overly complicated, bass/guitar part?

Do yourself a favor and write it down on paper with a pencil.
It takes a while at first, but you will get the hang of it and it is a great exercise to keep the reading skills fresh.
I recently started writing out guitar parts for my guitards even though they can't read it.
But I do write the chords above the staff lines so they can follow along.
Can't say it helps them any, but it helps keep me fresh.

Similar to that, I've got a Sonuus i2m (instrument to midi) converter that works pretty well. I can get MIDI from what I play on bass, and then I'm sure there's something out there that can transcribe that MIDI.

Celemony Melodyne can convert your recorded bass track to mid file. Then any MIDI to notation software can save it as notation score.

1. Record your bass as an audio file (wav, mp3).
2. Open your bass track in standalone Celemony Melodyne Studio.
3. Go to File - Save As - select *.mid for saving.
4. Open your mid file in any notation software and print it.

In the Melodyne you can also manually correct any intonation or timing problems for correct results before exporting as *.mid.
Check many Melodyne tutorials on YouTube.

all this computer stuff takes as much time as writing it out if you just practice writing / reading for a while.

I swear, all the time, money & energy that goes into the whole computer music/recording/processing stuff just takes time away from playing and writing songs. Whatever format you record at today (Pro-Tools, Logic, Cubase, 24bit, 192 khz, non-interlaced etc) will be useless in 20 years.

I still say write it down on paper and photocopy it for others to read.

tape reels from today will easily last 20 years plus if stored properly, and music studios will always have a tape machine.
