Is there any difference between a Peavey Max 700 & Firebass?

I remember reading somewhere that the Firebass was actually designed as a way for Peavey to use the excess parts that had from other projects. When sales of it took off, they went into production with the MAX.

I have the firebass700 that I recently bought for a killer $75! That was one day before I ordered an Eden Wt550 (which I didn't for an obvious $700 differance). I have to say the firebass does very well. It feels like it should have twenty tubes in it, but my only complaint (besides weight) is I think they were optimistic when they said 700wrms. I run a 2x10 and 1x15 (both 4ohm so I get the full watts) and yeah it's loud, but it doesn't seem like it is loud in the right spots. I am always boosting the lows on my bass(active) and the eq which doesn't seem quite right to me. Anyway, this is my first experience with peavey and all I can say is...the price is right!

I had read a thread here on Talkbass about that same thing. I guess Peavey built the Firebass to use up left over PA parts. Amps, tranformers and the such. Funny that they were successful by accident.

Well, seeing the Firebasses had been in production for quite a number of years before the Max700 came out, im not sure how true that is, maybe initially, but they surely started producing parts for it sooner than later when it was still the Firebass.

There are a large number of different firebasses (cosmetically). I think there may be some "refinements", but i dont think there is anything anyone would notice which is different :)

Hey, I'm just recalling from memory something that I read and now that srxplayer mentioned it, it may have very well been one of the Peavey reps on this board that described it in a thread.

First of all, the Firebass, white face and black, and the Max 700 are the same amps.

The power transformer was one that was used in a P.A. power amp, but only half of it was used. The original amp was a stereo amp, and the firebass was mono. The Firebass was supposed to use up those transformers. The rest of the power amp used a lot of other stock parts. The preamp was original. The Firebass did take off more than expected and I think it's been the most successful Peavey bass amp to date, or at least very high on the list.

The amp that was solely built to use up parts was the Alphabass all-tube head, which is why they had limited production numbers.

I have used the Firebass 700 for a few years and I really like the tones you can get from this amp. I have A/B'ed it with a Carvin 1000w amp bridged at 4ohms with the Firebass at 2ohms and I couldn't really hear a difference in the volume of the two. Of course at those volume levels I was probably feeling it more than hearing it. I've never played a Max 700 but I would imagine it would sound just like the Firebass.
