Is there really such a thing as a MIM Squier?

Over time there have been MIM, MIJ, and MIK Squiers. MIJ Squiers have a good rep, but seem to have inflated prices recently. My old roommate had a MIK and when we took it apart the body was made of chipboard.

The MIM Squiers were made to the same standards as the MIM Fenders of that period. Solid wood bodies, no plywood. The bodies and necks were virtually indistinguishable (save for the logo).

Chipboard? Or plywood? I just took apart a Korean Squier yesterday and the body is plywood.

IF there seems to be no relief/neck problems and the condition and the way it feels agrees with you, TRY and find a better PBass for $300. It it was solid, and I was in the market, and it's a square deal, it would go home with me.

Of course, if it doesn't hit you, move on.

And yes, as others have pointed out, since the 80's, Squier production has wandered all round the Pacific Rim, I'm supposing depending on Fender production capacity and economic conditions.

I left those out because that’s where they’re currently made.

but if you wanna get wild with the Fender origin story, look up the MIC Fender Starcaster bass

Oh boy, let's go wilder then... Fender Jazz Bass Southern Cross, built by Giannini in Brazil, during a short period, there's also the Squiers but I couldn't find a proper picture...

Don’t forget India. They were made there as well.

OP, regarding the bass, as other said, yes it’s legit. I imagine it may be similar to the ‘94 MIM Fender “Squier series” p bass I had. That bass, if I’m being honest, was kinda junk. The body, more specifically, really showed some cut corners. The neck pocket had overhang from the neck heel, and the round overs on the edges were still really square and blocky. The neck was fine. Nothing wrong, but nothing special. IMO, the current affinity models are better made.

I bought a MIM Strat from the 90’s in this series at a pawn shop for $60 many years ago. It’s nice and light and a pretty decent guitar, but no where near the feel or quality of my 89’ MIA Strat. But, that should be expected.
