Double Bass Is there such a string?

So you guys really like the Superflexibles? I am not over fond of them. They just don't seem to have much character to them. The E isn't near as powerful as a Spirocore E. That said, YMMV especially since every bass is so different...

I'll echo what someone else said, I wish there was a SF weich set. I emailed that suggestion in a very polite way to Thomastik once, but they failed to even reply with a "we've received your email and someone will look at it". Pirasto is way more responsive, then again, I guess until recently, they've always been chasing Spirocores for dominance.

I do like Superflexibles, but agree that they lack character from Spirocores. Some blend of Mittels and SFs may be just right for people in Huy's situation. Unfortunatly they don't match well with spriocore weichs from a tension perspective. Then again, almost anything is a step down from spirocores from a character standpoint.

I'm afraid to look. But I'd wager there are assorted Pirastros, maybe some Oblis and Evahs, and Velvets, etc.

Time for a shed sale. You might need the cash when it comes time for a new set of guts.....:D

Seriously, it's great that you can be generous here with forwarding a set of strings. There is nothing like popping for a new set of strings, only to find out shortly later that they ain't happenin' on your instrument.

+1 on the SF Weichs, that would be a nice option. I've played SF's on different basses, and they were plenty supple....but not so with the set I purchased for myself.

The SF set doesn't feel balanced to me. The E feels lower in tension than the A,D,G. They are also higher tension than Spirocore Mittels. I just took a set off of my new bass, and it sounds a lot more lively now(of course they were about 10 years old when I bought it...). I will say this though, when the Superflexible G is broken in, it does sound quite nice, and is easier to bow than Spirocore.

yeah, they feel higher tension than medium spircores. I'd like to see superflexible weichs close to Mittels in gauge and between Mittels and Weichs in tension. I think that Thomastik could put a dent in the Evah Pirazzi market with that string, especially because of the ability to fairly seemlessly use a Spriocore here and there.

...The string that comes to mind for what you describe wanting is the Thomastik Dominant.

+1! When I read this:
A string that is sorta similar to Spiro, but not so "in yo face". A mellow spiro orch. Not neccessarily darker, but with more warmth, timbre.

...it was like reading my own definition of the Doms. I would, however, characterize the Doms as somewhat darker than the Spiros. For me, "warmth" and darker go together.

ok here goes. Took the Helicore Hybrids off (too dark... it just keeps getting darker) and put on BIGGUS' superflexes with the stark E back on. We'll see where this goes in a week or so.

I've used Doms before on the old Chrissy. I think they'll be too dark honestly. Who knows tho... may try them if the SF's don't do it. I only want mildly darker. More after the timbre... something that will give a little bit of crunchiness to the sound when amplified. I don't think I'm neccessarily looking for warmth.

Oh well... that was short lived. After about a week, the bass got really dark. :hmm: But that A string was pretty f'n good up until the end.

I even tried Spiro Solos briefly. Got that spiro sound and definintely mellower, but there was a loss of volume, strings were a little too floppy (as expected), and had to work too hard to play fast. Slapped the orchs back on and it almost plays itself. Everything responds immediately. Bass sounds full now, and taking the strings on and off seemed to have taken some of the spiro zing out. Much happier now.

BTW: As an attempt to balance the strings out, the Stark E is mounted naked. I put tone filters/felt washers on the other 3 strings, all spiro orch. Nothing makes the bass respond like Spiros. Don't think I will be changing. I guess I just need to break in the strings with time and play.

PM me if you wanna try MJ's superflex set, I'll spread the love.

I liked the A string in the SF set as well. Good news, that you have settled on the Spiro set. I thought that simply taking them off and putting them back on your bass might help the problem!
