Thanks for the fast replies! I've just recieved these pics by email, so guess there's some sort of reason why it's these angles. Guess I'll just tell him to go to hell with this crap..

Or find a reliable guitar tech or salesperson locally to weigh in on it. If it's a Squier VM Fretless, it's got a street value of around $200-$250. If it's a fake, much less.

could be a parts bass and not a standard factory bass
the older American JAzz Deluxes had the raised chrome decal and abalone dot inlays

Based on the pics cant really tell
Could be a US Deluxe neck attached to either a Squier or US body
need more pics !

its more than likely a rebadged Squier VM fretless
since US Fenders haven't had trussrod adjustment on the headstock side in years
I wouldnt pay over 200

Yep, that's the first thing I noticed, too.

Plus, on Fenders the string tree is closer to the A-string tuner. On Squiers they're placed slightly further away, down towards the nut like the one in the picture.

Almost certain that it is a squier vintage modified fretless with fender decal. The woodgrain looks like agathis and fretboard resembles the ebonol of the vm squier.

Hmmm Truss adjustment on the head stock end, not good.
Suppose you can't tell how many fret markers it has (20, 22, or 24).
The bass owner seems to have taken photos at deliberate angles as not to display too much, a picture of the whole thing would be better, and ask for the serial #.
Get him to specify is it a genuine "Fender Jazz standard" or a Squire, is it MIA, MIM, MIJ or MIC

Just look at the body wood especially under the strings, it screams SX or cheap Fender knock off.

I thought the same thing about the grain on the headstock, something about the color and pattern

You noticed wrong. There's a shadow on that bit of the headstock the creates an optical illusion. Click on the pick for a larger version.

BTW This is not fake. It's an original Squier VM with a fake Fender logo
