Is this common pratice?

Hey all, I've got his offer from a webzine/magazine/podcast to have one of my original songs on a compilation CD. However, they're asking me 66$ for this. I realize that this is gonna give me exposure and all, but is this common practice? Thanks in advance.

I would pass for sure. I had one of my songs featured in a recording article and on their CD, never hit me up for so much as a dime. Sounds like a pure money making enterprise to me. Kind of like the way that Hollywood "agents" used to get young starlets to pay for "publicity photos". YMMV

Pay to play. Never mind, when was the last time people were buying CDs, especially compilations of unknown bands?

No, no it’s not. Who do you think will buy it other than the bands who paid to get on it? Do you think they will promote it??
Just to make it clear, it's a free CD included with a magazine. This used to be popular in the 90s. :)
