Is this common pratice?

Interesting, I just received a second (similar) proposition, again via my band's FB page:

(Name of person) Proposal for your band

Hi, I'm Alan, the owner of the zine on black and white paper in 90's style called xxx xxxxxxx xxxxx. It's a zine in which the first issue is already out both in Italian and English version and this is the second issue...it supports the underground, the most extreme one... I'd like to make you a proposal for your band... It will guaranteed an interview and a review with the send of a physical copy of your CD and once the zine is finished, the complete zine will be sent in homage with your interview and review... What about? Are you interested in the proposal? If you find all interesting you can send you stuff at the following address:

(Name and address)

What do you guys think? It is NOT the same person.

OK. It's developping as I'm typing this. And it's getting interesting.

Guy says it's all free, I just have to send a CD. I reply, I have no physical CDs yet, but I can send you a code for getting the Digital Album for free on Bandcamp. His reply is ''Do we only work with the physical material when the physical arrives?''... So, do you think he just wants a free CD?

The language used has the distinct whiff of Nigerian Prince style, much improved but still 'off'.

Hey all, I've got his offer from a webzine/magazine/podcast to have one of my original songs on a compilation CD. However, they're asking me 66$ for this. I realize that this is gonna give me exposure and all, but is this common practice? Thanks in advance.

If the CD is going to DJs then paying a fee for that isn't unusual, but that doesn't sound like that's what this is. If it's going to get into the hands of every reader, it might still be worth it. It only matters if it's part of a bigger promotional plan. If you're not promoting something like a release or a tour, $66 isn't that much money to see what happens.

Edit. You mentioned this, but it IS a pretty dated approach. Will they put you on a playlist? How many subscribers does it have?

Doubt it's a full scam, but probably not a good investment. Every band I've found through podcasts were played for free, if not paid. Sixty dollars won't make a pretty good song a hit.

EDIT: Oh, and if you love a podcast, send them a track. They might like/use it, and that relationship is far more valuable. I just can't think of a single podcast I like that puts random, paid-promotion music anywhere. At all. Can't think of one.

Salut Atshen :)

you are a metalhead? (that's what I get from your avatar)

Hey all, I've got his offer from a webzine/magazine/podcast to have one of my original songs on a compilation CD.

Ever heared of them? Or other metalheads? Are they really popular?

they're asking me 66$ for this.

Not a lot!

Can be good, can be bad!!! :D,

Check out who they are! Before you give money to someone,

always ask everybody in your local scene if they know the label,

the promoter, the club (even the bar owner!)

when you get an offer!

A lot of independant folks do a nice job (promoting metal) these days!

But the vultures are out there too!

greetings
