Is this Fender Precision 1978 FAKE???NEED HELP!!!pictures inside

ok, my friend bought off ebay 1978 Fender Precision, everything looks fine until he took off pickguard and neck....

As you can see it has been refinished, but thats not tragedy many of 70´s were refinished but that holes....also s.n. on neck is suspicious
Iam not fender maniac but this body doesnt seem to be genuie fender for me....or better no 1978 Preci I´ve ever saw (detailed ebay photos etc.) had such routing and "cnc" holes(even MIM, MIJ doesnt have it)



so whats your opinion??
Is possible that it isnt fender body and it is some "licensed" china body????
Or were this cnc holes usual in any era of fender???

Looks legit to me too although it looks more like an early '80's body to me.

Those 80's bodies have a one big pickup / control cavity route instead of two seperate routes with a hole drilled between the two. The 'generous' neck pocket is a dead giveaway too. Looks exactly like the neck pocket on my '78 P. If you need a fork-lift truck to pick it up, then it's a late 70's P bass! ;)

I'm no huge expert though, just a fan.

Yup, neck is a '78 but the body could be from the early '80s.

Fender started getting a little lazy around then with their construction methods. Like routing one big hole for the pickup and controls cavities as opposed to taking their time and routing two cavities then drilling between them for the wiring.

It's all legit though, don't worry.

The pickguard definitely isn't original though, they only came in black and white around then. The pickup looks like it might be a replacement too, the pole pieces look bigger than normal. If you pop it out and look on the underside it should have a date stamp if it's a Fender part. And yes, it's definitely had a Badass bridge on it at some point.

None of the above is a big deal IMO and wouldn't detract too much from the value unless you wanted to sell it as an all-original instrument.

thats why i´ve started this thread because when i check another 78´ precisions at ebay they didnt have such routing holes and "extended" control cavity....but early 80´ has such routing holes etc.

this is 78´ Preci from ebay - no routing holes so comparision with them is useless :-(

This is an early 80's P Bass.

The neck is date stamped 1980. It has an S8 serial but S8 serials were used through '82.

The body has all the proper rout channels for a '80-'83.

So this is legit, but you were asssuming it's a 78, which it is not. it's actually an '80/'81.

Yes, in auction it was presented as 1978 Precision...

I think it doesnt matter and it shouldnt be better or worse than real 1978.
