Is this just the classic P-Bass / Ampeg SVT magic?

Around the 02:00 mark, Duncan from Basement can be clearly heard as he’s playing on his own for a bit… He’s got that gritty, overdriven sound which I love. I can’t seem to get that sound with my P-Bass

Is it just the magic P-Bass/Ampeg SVT sound, or do you reckon there’s an OD pedal somewhere in the middle? What are your thoughts?

Sounds awesome. I've never managed to push this model of SVT to drive this much without a pedal, and there is a small pedalboard in front of him, so yeah, I'd say it's probably some OD pedal. Try contacting the guy, he'll probably tell you what it is.

he is definitely using some pedals. I can hear a heavy overdriven tone (kinda maxim out the Vintage Deluxe) mixed with a clean DI.

Sounds like he's using light flanging IMHO.

Similar to this J-Bass sound at 2:20, but not quite as wet

Don't have a sansamp, but I've heard demos with it that don't sound far off from this.

Also, I've gotten a number of similar tones using my HX Stomp with different amp/pedal combinations.

Around the minute mark you can see his board. His last pedal looks like a 4 knob silver one, could it be a Darkglass VMT?

This video makes me want a black on black on Maple P bass badly

Sounds/looks like a Fulltone Bass Drive to me. Caleb Scofield of Cave In used one with a P bass also. If you listen back to Jupiter or Antenna the tones are very similar to this video.

Yep, Sansamp Bass Driver or similar

Thanks for the reminder, I haven’t listened to Basement in a while.

Ive played Pbasses with a BassDrive through a number of amps and I you can definitely cop that sound.

You can find used BassDrives pretty cheap these days, especially since Fulltone has fallen from grace.

You can choose weather the boost comes before or after the overdrive, which you can’t do with the original. It also has a smaller footprint, and you can choose your graphic preference.

Just a reminder: What is shown in a video may not necessarily been what was used on a track....Also, string type and newness also plays into it........It certainly sounds like a P Bass - how it was processed on the actual recording may or may not be what we see

P bass, rounds, and a Fulltone OCD or Bassdrive into an Ampeg with the Ultra buttons pushed (or) a SansAmp.
