Cans of worms...

i like it.. always have been a fan of relics, have one of my own..
prob is guys slate it.. think its fake unrealistic
i posted mine last week and some guy was like oh the relicing on the hardware looks awful , actual fact is its 1971 original hardware.. people dont know **** yet are first to judge.. same was said about the wear on my headstock.. i didnt even bother replying people annoided me so much..:mad::mad:

end of the day if you feel confident enough do it :bassist:
Relics are great, dont get me wrong i have 2 pristine basses too my UV70 would pass as new ffs.. so i can speak from both sides of the border.. id much rather rock out my relic then my UV or P..

do it you look like you know what ur doing :D

Honestly, to do a really convincing relic you'll have to strip the body and neck down to bare wood, spray it with a nitrocellulose or modern laquer and then start "aging" it. Modern polyurethanes are bullet-proof and are very difficult to get looking aged, at least convincingly. Mind you, to some people "abused" and "reliced" are synonymous but I think there's a mega difference. I keep seeing variations of the "relic" treatment where the bass was obviously just beat to hell exhibiting bizarre batter marks and spraypaint splotches that aren't indicative of age, it just looks like the owner didn't give a crap about his/her bass and merely abused it.

Some tips on relicing:

  • to age hardware, clean it thoroughly with acetone, handle the pieces with plastic/latex gloves and put in a sealed bucket with a small reservoir of hydrochloric acid at the center so that only the fumes will "age" (etch) the surface.
  • use a heat gun judiciously on parts of the bass where the wood isn't tinted but has a clearcoat of laquer so as to "age" it with a yellowish or brownish tint.
  • Use "refrigerant in a can" to "check" and crack the nitro or laquer finish.
  • Don't put wear marks in areas of the body or neck where they wouldn't occur from normal playing.

In short, remember that you're prematurely aging the bass... not f***ing it up and abusing it.

There's a HUGE difference between Lauren Becall's beauty at the age of 80 and a 30 year old crack ho who looks like she's 70.;)

That plate looks reliced to me too. The edges are much shinier than the middle and its consistent all the way round- even up against the pg where it would get very little wear - like it's been sandpapered.

i wouldnt say consistent ill find another pic.. alot of ware around the knobs but the jack is still clean ish.. got the view of 3 people 2 agreed it was original and one was cautious.. either one it was 10bucks :smug:

These relic jobbies are getting my GAS going.. Flea... superb... Brett does a good job and Darkstars reliced TB was fantastic... there's also a CV Jazz rep that is superb... stacked knobs and all... me likey!

It's something I'd like to have a go at meslf.. but it'll turn out crap... like most things I do at the mo'... oh well.

bah. all the power to you, but the only relic I'd ever spend money on is one that came from real playing and real aging. there's nothing special to me about pretending something is old.... but it being old is another thing. and to be honest, I'd think that an old bass where the laqueur is cracked but it is otherwise in immaculate shape would be far more appealing than one that has the siht beat out of it or appears so - all the aging marks should have personal significance of some sort - at least to me.

i'd say by the pictures it looks like it's been in a fire and is ruined.... but don't let me spoil your party.

Well, ive seen a lot of different wear marks on basses, and I happen to have one that the finish reacted to something and now it is all gummy when exposed to sweat. It looks the same way your guitar does.

A lot of people have a mental image of what a relic should look like, but there are plenty of "relics" with pretty unconventional wear patterns..

Anyway, it´s your bass, go crazy with it!
