Just noticed on my CV P that the tone control doesn't work unless the volume is dimed. Are all like this? Never noticed it before.

I could have never noticed it before because i've pretty much always had my volume all the way open.
It depends on what you call "working"...The volume knob is somewhat of a tone knob as well.
When the pickup isn't fully "open" the sound reflects that; usually not as bright or aggressive. If you have the volume at half and the sound is already muffled...there's not much high end for the tone knob to do anything to. That said, I can hear my tone knob working just fine at different volumes on my Fender P, just not as obvious of a difference at the lower levels. That's all IME, anybody else care to chime in?

When I mean working I mean. I can have the tone rolled completely off, and get that chocolately smooth goodness, and then if i roll the volume off a quarter, it sounds like I'm running almost wide open again, and then I'll bump that quarter of the volume back up and it's back to muddy smoothness. And while I have the volume backed off i can move the tone all the way up and down and there is 0 tonal difference.
how so? Tone control works great when volume is all the way open. I would think if one was damaged then it would have problems either way.
Maybe post a picture of your wiring. Could someone have messed with it before you owned it? I'm not sure what's causing the problem, but the first thing I would do is check it against a standard P bass wiring diagram. In particular, make sure the tone capacitor goes from one leg of the tone pot to ground, and not to one of the positive legs of the volume pot.

The tone knob on my 60s CV works fine at any volume setting. I have not made any modifications to it except for a set of flats and an added PU cover.

the tone knob should work in any volume position. and it should actually cut even a tiny bit more highs if the volume control is backed off.
iif it doesn't, then something is wired wrong or you have a bad component.

I'll take a look at it in a bit. I did buy this used from MF but it was labeled as a condition 1 - like new so I don't know.
