Whew, that's a tough one. Both my bass and my car are top of the line, and both were gifts so putting monetary value to either is something I rarely think about. My bass is the first Steinberger L2 fretless 5 string ever made, it has the actual prototype bridge of this design. I have it because my best friend was Ned's first employee in Brooklyn and I was, you know....there. My car is an un-unique, but equally free, yellow Toyota '88 pickup truck. Ok, so it's not a one of a kind like my 'berger, but it is a terrific tool and I use it as much as I use my bass. I guess you'd say that they were both worth about the same to me, even though the 'berger is probably worth more in monetary sense.

Is your BASS worth more than your CAR??

I finally retired my 1991 Toyota Corolla station wagon about a year ago. Any one of my basses were worth more than the car was. The stereo/cd changer I put in that car was worth more than the car was. It just kept running, so no point spending money oon a new car until something broke that cost more than the car was worth. Every single major piece of gear was worth more than the car was. If you add up costs of replacing all the cords/guitar stands, THAT might have been worth more than the car was....

I own eight basses. They cost £150, £250, £600, £900, £1000, £1200, £1300 and £1600. Yike - that's £7000!!

All together, all my basses it's about $3,000.
I paid $5,000 my truck. Then I seized the engine, that was another $5,000. Now I just had the whole front end redone, that's about another $1,100. I hate that truck. If anyone ever say's that "hate is a strong word" tell them to talk to me if they want to know how strong it really can be.
My basses have never done me wrong. 'Cept my first one, my Peavey Foundation bass. I need to get a new input jack for that. Atleast it's not going to cost the same as the value of the instrument in it's whole. Ugh.

Tough one to answer. The beater car is a 1987 BMW 320i. The family car is a 2005 Mercedes A class. The basses fall in between in value but closest to the beater.

As for me, the replacement value of my bass is worth more than both my cars; used it is about the same as one, and worth more than the other:
2000 Daewoo Lanos; 125K miles
1985 Buick LeSabre; 175K miles (still runs awesome!)

This reminds me of when Elwood Blues told his brother he traded the old "Bluesmobile" (a Cadillac) for a microphone. He understood completely...
Generally my bass was worth more than my car. Certainly not now. Prior to getting married, my total equipment investment was probabaly close to the value of my transportation. But during that time I was gigging alot, had a well paying job but, but I bought a new vehicle every 8-14 months.

But my car is mechanically sound, MOT'd (that's our mandatory annual safety test over here in the UK, don't know what the US equivalent is), has decent tyres, etc, etc, etc. It's as safe as any other car I could buy. I drive it every day on business, and have done long distances over most of Britain with it. It's never let me down - except once when I ran out of fuel, my fault entirely. Like I said, it suits me perfectly for what I need it to do. I really don't feel the need to change it just yet.
