Double Bass ISB Convention 2023 - Who's going?

I'm 90% sure I will be going, driving from Maryland. Not sure whether to bring my bass, but probably will if I drive. Any clues when a more detailed schedule will be posted? It says June 5-10 but I am guessing that June 5 is basically just the "teaching bass as a non-bassist" day. Is the last event of the convention usually an evening thing? Anyway, would love to know who is thinking of going and any tips on where to stay in Ann Arbor. I've only been there once, for a concert when I was in grad school down the road in Bowling Green. My last ISB convention was Houston in 1997!

I'm not sure about the schedule for the first day, but in the previous ones that I've attended, Saturday (the last day) always had a really strong lineup with an evening concert. I think I had to leave early to get my flight one year and was gutted, so it's worth staying for that day if you can. I'm not sure of the details, but I would expect more information to be available soon. They always have a stellar lineup and there's normally an onsite accommodation option.

I'm hoping to go this year but haven't booked anything yet. Is anyone else coming?

I'm going later in the week. Make sure to be there Saturday ! And volunteer, it's a lot of fun. Ask Madeleine about schedule releases maybe now. [edit] As for housing suggestionsI've got contacts on campus there, will ask them and get back .

I'm on an alternate list to present this time around. If that status changes, I will go. If not, I may have to miss it as we are dong a major renovation and the expense would represent a case of bad timing.

I have been a member of the ISB for a long time but have never made it to a convention. I have some other scheduling challenges that might make this one hard to attend, but depending on how things go, I might make an attempt to show up. It's close to my hometown (Toledo, OH area) and so I could go and visit my parents. But there'd be basically no way I could bring a bass along, and that could be painful.

I've been a member since it started but have only been to one convention. That one was great, very well organized and great presenters and hangs. I would like to go to another one if possible. After all of the fantastic concerts, recitals, and workshops I came away wondering if compared to these people I really knew how to play at all.

I was looking into it, but there are a LOT of shows finally happening again this summer & I already have several others on the books and a busy gig schedule, so not this time.

Honestly, no offense intended, but I talked with them about stop having all the events in places like Michigan and the middle of nowhere Ohio and the rest of of boredom. Schedule them for Breckenridge or Santa Cruz or someplace fun & I'll be first on the list. Life is sooooooooooooooooooo much more than just sitting around talking about spruce and varnish for 90 hours and my limited free time needs more stimulus!!!!!!

When I go to another big show in Seattle, at the last one I went sailing in the San Juans for the week before, booked a couple of evening gigs in town, attended the event, and then climbed Mt Rainier after.

You know how to do it. I've lived out here for 10+ years and still haven't made it to the top of Rainier, although I have done a bit of sailing, and I climbed Baker a while ago...

The only one I've been to was in the SF Bay area within a few hours drive of where I live so I was able to bring my bass, which I'm very glad I did. I wanted it to be a "total immersion" experience so I never left the campus where the event took place. I went to every event I could and was sorry for the ones I missed due to scheduling conflicts. I was also able to see old friends and hang out with new people. It was a great experience and I wish one of them would take place closer to me before I'm too old to go and bring my bass. I don't understand spending time and money to go to one of these without making full use of everything it has to offer.

I was hoping there would be more of an interest in my presentation “contrapuntal devices for improvised bass” but alas… there is not I have gotten so much inspiration out of two line counterpoint (much to the brilliant work of guitarist Jimmy wyble) that I was working on some material I thought would be of interest (harmony is a result of counterpoint not the other way around) to understanding the movement of musical ideas.

Two line counterpoint! I have composed three pieces this season for "vocalizing bassist", one of which I already premiered. The other two at the end of this month. The first one went over great, and this working with two lines, one person is a heck of a lot of fun. There isn't actually much counterpoint per se, but working with just voice and bass is a whole world of possibility.

I am from the Bay Area, I tend to use Big Sur as a metric for natural beauty (I was unimpressed by Cape Cod, outside of the oysters!). The midwest has a lot more going on than you'd think, I am sure you could find some killer MTB trails in that area, if you did make it.

I spoke to someone shortly before they updated their site. I believe they mentioned that they have a secure place to check in/out/store one's bass during/throughout the convention.

Morning warm-ups , midday groups and practicing not to mention all the great teaching ideas and master class lessons or people just chatting in the hallway doesn't make you want to play? The store room makes it pretty convenient . Hmm, I do wonder where one can practice ? And making time to practice by choosing which sessions you're _not_ going to can be tough.
