It’s about time !!

MeShell was a light in a tunnel of samples and keyboards during the Nineties. I loved Plantation Lullabies and Peace Beyond Passion. I played and played along with her albums constantly. I honestly cannot think of a better debut album than Plantation Lullabies. I had the pleasure of seeing MeShell twice in 1996-1997 when she had the great David Dyson as her touring bassist.

That was dynamic duo. I miss that era of Meshell.

Thank you so much for sharing. She is so good and there are so many great bass lines over the years that I'd like to do a top 10 spanning ALL her records when I have more time. Consider this the appetizer!

A top ten of MeShell would be awesome. I am very much biased towards three of her first four albums because that was when she was funkiest. Just off the top of my head in no particular order:
1. Old School Record
2. If that’s your Boyfriend (he wasn’t last night)
3. Soul on Ice
4. The Way
5. Leviticus (F****t)
6. God Fear Money
7. Wild Night
8. Nocturnal Sunshine
9. Soul Searching (Higher Learning Soundtrack)
10. Bittersweet

I was given this to learn from the band back in the 90s. So much fun.

I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio ('94?) and thinking "that's some great bass-playing" (It was rare to hear such a good bass part on a pop tune at the time).

I had no clue who Meshell Ndgeocello was back then, let alone that it was her playing AND singing so beautifully on that JCM record. Let's just say that in the thirty years hence, I've been well and truly schooled. She's about as funky as they get.
