Give me a passive 4-string Jazz bass and I can be quite happy all day long.

How do you handle the thoughts of your bass needing something you can't do yourself and needing a bass for something while it's in the shop?
I had thought I could just buy one of those cheap Yamaha RBX PJ type basses ( one felt surprisingly nice at a GC) if that happened to just get by and sell it afterward.

The thought of just embracing your main bass and tossing all the other possibilities and just honing your skills on it seems attractive. And freeing...

I've whittled down my g&l l2500 collection down to one too. My only custom ordered l2500, which I won't be able to get rid of anytime soon. Trying to save up for a custom bass from a Seattle builder, though.

Congrats on your bass austerity.

I sold off my RW Jazz, though it was absolutely superb. I tend to keep the best of my own builds, and my mutt fretless Jazz happens to have a set of RW pickups. Can't sell your only fretless or all hell will break loose

Nice P-bass. Bet it's a blast to play. But I hope I never get to the point you're at.

i own 4 basses and each of them is different and awesome in their own way. I'm doing my best not to go into a lengthy description here... but SR500 with active bart soapbars - bass I've used most w/ my band so far.. recently demoted.. , GSR200 - cheap..but impressive tones.. got it used for dirt cheap.. my beater.. if you don't know how to touch a lady you can play this bass.. and then there's my passive P-bass.. that is just amazing in sound, but turned out not to be what I need for what i play with my band. I play it all the time at home though, my favorite with 0 tone knob.

Then i just got a Jazz.. it's white..it's pretty. I replaced the pots and knobs. It is the tone I've been looking for.. it suits my playing style. ITS WHITE!. heh.. Anyway I'll be rocking that with the band, using the sr500 as a backup.. could decide I like those actives.

Don't get me wrong. I love your RW P Bass. I bet it's a blast to play... and hope your one bass suits you for as long as you need/want it to. But I think I'd be a little heartbroken if I lost any one of mine.

I wish I could be a one bass guy. I don't feel the need for a backup. I have a pair of Roscoes right now - fretted and fretless - but I think if push came to shove, I could get by with one. Not sure if I'd go fretted or fretless.

I was a one bass guy for 35 years. It was only 3 years ago that I doubled my collection. I play the new one exclusively. Regardless of multi-screen images on YouTube, you can only play one at a time. If I were a studio musician I'd probably be singing a different tune, so I'm not a complete hypocrite. :cool:

Hopeless. I have 4 that I just have to have:
'77 fretless Ripper I bought new that gets played every day and is used for jazzy gigs.
an '04 MM Sterling 4 banger single pup/maple board that is a slappy machine; a technique I love and practice every day, but rarely get to play out any more. Usually a backup guitar. GREAT tones!
a very modded passive '75 P modded to JPJ decades ago with Duncans and sports Chrome Flats. Have owned this since '80 and was my main forever. Still gets played thru old Sunns w/ Tortex 1mm & 1.18 - think I like the JD SuperGrip 1mm better, tho. Too many adventures together - could never part. Great sounding axe!
And a '93 Jackson Pro Concert V w LaBella SuperSlaps. Loud, great variety of tones - used for hard rock and metal bands. Still gets used for jams. Everybody should have one fiver!

Have a '80 4001 that never gets played out anymore - sits by the computer so can reach over and grab. RotoSound 66 that were last changed in '90 - still sound good! Left over from punk days - could cut through duo Gibson+Marshalls geetarists. Always wanted a Rick as a kid. Couldn't bear to part with this.
And a '93 Jerry Jones tic-tac 6 my brother gave to me, but never use. Don't know what to do with it, but it's from my bro!

Would still like a Lakland 55-02 rosewood board and a fretless 5er. Something like a cheaper MTD. Not a boutique guy at all. Like used stuff. But I'm way old and don't gig out much anymore and think touring days are over - pretty hard to justify getting more. But couldn't survive with one or two.
