I'm pretty sure I played Incantation and Dance in high school concert band - on bass clarinet. I was listening to King Crimson around that time too.
Rite of Spring blew my mind when I heard it a year or two later, by then I was deep into more King Crimson, Yes, Van der Graaf Generator, Genesis... and learning bass guitar.

My references for classical music were the music used in cartoons that I watched on TV and my younger brother studying classical piano since he was 7 years old. He eventually had an audition at Julliard but he wound up as a genetic engineer with several patents. Personally, I think he made the right decision.
Me? I was offered a chance to take lessons and I wanted Vibes since I loved to hear Lionel Hampton on TV but my parents signed me up for accordion lessons at the age of 9. I later taught myself piano, guitar and bass. I wound up as an electronic engineer but continued to play music every chance I got. I retired from engineering 13 years ago and continue to play music.

I used to like to listen to Classical in Uni., at the library, on my Walkman (cassettes) 
...no lyrics so I found it to be less distracting...a girl I started seeing played cello and had a full conductors score of the Brandenburg Concertos...I had so much fun following all the instruments, conducting it all in my living room

My SO's cassette Walkman is under the kitchen steps. We placed al kinds of "time capsules" all over the house during our renovation projects.I used to like to listen to Classical in Uni., at the library, on my Walkman (cassettes)
