It's not just the kids......

Not surprised at all. I see this with elderly drivers all the time. I don't think it's the thoughtlessness one would assume it was in a younger driver. I think there's a very dangerous phase when a person is just not as alert and not as capable of seeing what they're doing as they once were, but don't realize it yet. People treasure their independence, and cars are so essential in modern society, that it's really hard to recognize when the time comes that you should no longer be on the road. It's a tough decision, often by the kids, to have to take the keys away from a nice elderly person.

I attended a funeral the other day, for my brother-in-law's father. His widow only just was moved into an apartment where she won't need to drive and gave up her keys. She has early-stage Alzheimer's. Talking to my brother-in-law and his siblings, apparently she nearly killed or got killed by drivers about three times in the last week.
My stepfather developed dementia in his last years and would get lost going to the store or coming home from the senior center.

Do you happen to drive a Buick and have huge ears? If so, about 140,000 of your people are in Eastern NC.

Not long after wifey and I met for the first time, we were on our way somewhere and got stuck behind some old guy in a big sedan doing about 20. I mentioned it being a PITA and she directed my attention to the guy's ears and told me for future reference if they've got big ears just relax and wait for a chance to pass.
