It's nuthin more than what the good lord blessed me with!
It was a Mark Hoppus signature P bass. After a year or so, I came to the conclusion that the P neck just wasn't what I loved. So I bought a Carvin SB-4000 neck and had a luthier friend of mine do me a 2 x 2 headstock (I really don't care for the inline Fender style, or string trees for that matter) put an oil finish on the neck, and mount it for me.
It plays and sounds great! I love my Franken Hoppus.
It actually has my bands name as the logo on the head stock. Probably be impossible to sell, but I don't see that as being an issue.
Mark actually screwed it up the first time. He builds acoustic guitars, and likes things to have a certain feng shui to them. The original headstock was gonna be a snake head (Kind of a un-pointy V) but I wanted to recycle the Hip shot tuners off of the Fender neck. He cussed me out pretty good for wanting to use those big ass tuners! Anyway, they didn't fit real nice on his first try, so he added wood to the sides and did what he did. He hated the fact that it turned out so big an ungainly. I've tried to impress upon him that it's a bass, and things are supposed to be bigger, but he aint buying it.
