It’s Disco Friday :)

This is probably a good place for this. I'm having a devil of a time remembering what this track is, and/or finding it. (There are WAY too many things on the 'tubes labelled "space disco.") I don't have any of those "recognize this music" apps or things the kids are using these days. That, and I only have a few seconds of a couple of spots from the intro, snipped from an old radio spot.

So... anybody got any ideas? :help:

Thanks in advance if anyone can help ID this earworm. You could help answer a decades-old mystery. :roflmao:

It sounds like something from "War of the Worlds" I believe.

Haha! Yeah, that's it! I wonder if it was a single they released or some such. The playlist that came up wasn't there when a went looking a few years ago. I guess everything really does eventually end up on the internet. :roflmao:

Well, I have spent a large chunk of the day going through the WOTW tracks I found on the 'tubes, and apparently, the definition of "musical" was applied somewhat loosely, as it includes huge swathes of Richard Burton performing spoken-word narration. A little goes a long way, but when one is more interested in the music itself, it gets frustrating that this guy simply does not shut up. :cautious:

An aside: A lot of the original tracks are 12+ minutes long, and at more or less the same frenetic tempo (guess it's hard to relax with Martians chasing one around the countryside). I can only hope the drummer whipping all those 16th notes onto his hi-hat for a quarter of an hour at a time was supplied with a trap case full of cocaine and a nearby physical therapist. :wacky:

Either way, I think I'd have to be in a "vague" state to sit through all of that narration, but as the saying goes, that was a different time. :whistle: So I crawled over to Wikipedia to see if there were any alternatives. Sure enough...

To promote the 1978 release, an abridged album containing "Radio edits" was distributed to radio stations. Special intros and endings had to be added to certain tracks because they simply were not written with radio in mind. The "air play" album turned out so well that in 1981 CBS decided to release it commercially under the title Highlights from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds.

So now I think I have an idea which track they were using, but also that it would have come from the "radio edits" special, rather than the non-stop-epic-narrative version. To my amazement, the "Highlights" disc is still available on Amazon. I note from a few reviews that a lot of people actually like the "highlights" versions better, too.
