I've tried almost everything ... whats next?

Fair question but my '62RI P-bass, Hamer Cruise USA, and Sterling all sound wonderful. :D There has been something to love in each and every bass, and I often think that I never should have launched on this gassy journey.

I would love to just have my old Q5 and RV5 back.

Those are all 3 lovely basses. I'd love to try a Hamer Cruise someday. Maybe you're just not a "boutique" kind of a guy.
Maybe a dual pickup Sterling/Stingray/Bongo would be the way to go. Have you tried any of those?

I think you're right. I have tried a dual pup ray, and it was great. I decided to move it and look for one with a maple board to get that extra snap. Thats on the short list for sure. I think I'll go HS this time too.

Edit: I noticed in your sig you've got an '05LE ... thats what my sterling is. Killer.

Have you tried Skjolds? Excuse me this was mentioned...I didn't read through all the posts. Too many!

So far they've all failed my aesthetic screening. Same reason I don't have an Ex-Factor anymore.

That might be a good way to describe what I want in a 5-string. The tone of an ex-factor with a normal look.

Nice choice. I never thought i'd find a bass that I liked the finish better than my transparent white Metro, but the buttercream is just so thick, rich, and creamy that I think the 'Ray takes it in the aesthetics(sp?) dept. Problem is, this is my second 'Ray i've owned after never forgiving myself for selling my first one, that it's making me GAS for an HH or HS Stingray. But I still NEED a Ric and a T-Bird. It really never does end.

Pickles, are your still wandering around unsatisfied?:)

I'm telling you dude, give Gard a call and let him prescribe the cure!:D

Spec our your favorite wood combinations for a Roscoe SKB 5 and that empty feeling will soon disappear!;)

Whoops, I just noticed you have a Cruise bass! Cancel the JO, you've already got the best J out there. While my 2 Cruise basses are the Gotoh models, I applaud your fine taste in J basses.

Jeez, between the P, the Cruise, and the Sterling, you've got a lot of classic tones. What more can a bassist need?

:D

low Db :p

I love my 4-bangers but can't get a 5 to stick. Seems like they either have great bottom strings or great top strings, never both.

The extra pickup is cool, but I'd never trade a really smokin' single H to get it. Every ray feels a little different and when you've got a great one you ought to hold on to it. I ended up using good ol position 1 A LOT.

Thats definately an idea. 34" scale alder/maple/ebony sounds about right. hmmmmm ....

I'll tell you, one thing I will never try again, and thats a bass that is not a high end Boutique bass. I bought a 500 dollar bass, yesterday and Ive allready got it for sale. Once you go Roscoe, you never go back. :p If it dosnt cost at least 3 grand, I aint playin it.

Have you tried something with EMG 40's and a BTC? My best fiver has that array, and I think the sound from it fits the description you've outlined.

I'm refering to an L-5500. Even at 34 inches the low notes are to die for. I would describe the tone as exceptionally powerful and clear, and of course modern.
