"J" Pickup that Sounds Like a "P" Pickup???

Hi,

I'm strongly considering replacing the Hanson "J" pickup in a 55-02 and want to put a pickup in that will give me as much of a "P" tone as possible.

I'm assuming a split-coil humbucking pickup is a good starting point.

Any recommendations?

Probably the most "P" sounding set of J pickups I've ever tried was a set of Tesla Corona B2 pickups. The neck pickup was very P-like in nature - might just be what you're looking for. The website is www.teslatek.com

None. But I think the dimarzio ultra J has a little bit of what I like about P-basses in the bottom end. Its rounder than most Js. I know somebody else put one in a 55-94 and was happy with the results.

A J will never sound like a P though since the aperture is so much narrower.

Hi!

I ordered a custom wound pickup from Urban Pickups here in Sweden about a year back.

The specifics was a J pickup wound to sound like a P.
The result was astonishing. Wound with superthin wire for each coil and finished with an extra wrap of wire after this pic was taken for higher output and custom wireing optrions.

Its a poor mobile-camera pic.. but you get the idea!

Ive since then ordered 2 vintagesounding split-coil 5ers for my JBV fretless from him!

I really rekommend you try this guy out!

Ive got no idea! But Urban does.. He's a member here at talkbass, ive told him I rekommended his pickup i this thread.. Im sure he can answer your questions when he finds it!

My thaughts are these:
Great customer service!
This guy listened to all my crazy thaughts and requests and made a great sounding pickup!
Much more P-bass sounding than a regular neck jazz pickup.

Hi, i´m Urban...i heard that Anders "Liten" had said something about the pickup that he ordered from me, so here goes! The gauge is 43awg and it was wound to sound as close as you can get to a "P" with that bobbin! The sound is on the P side more than the Jazz side of the sound spectrum! It´s not a high bobbin as the regular Jazz, a litle more compact/low as the P bass! It´s not a high output, because you can´t get that much wire on it! DiMarzio Ultra Jazz. Much thicker than the Model J, and almost twice the output.

i have the ultra jazz and the model j's...the model j's are definitely more p like alhtough i prefer the ultra jazz because they have better clarity

I have the Model J's in my Jazz. The neck pickup solo'ed is definitely P-like, with it's own flair.

i know a lot of people prefer the ultra jazz over the dimarzio model j's... but i think if you're going for a "P" sound, model J's can't be beat.... from what i know, that's kind of what those pickups are known for -- the "P bass" sound. i use the model j's on my geddy lee sig jazz, and i gotta say, it really does give it a p- like sound, even though the geddy tends to naturally have a more high/mid rangey twangy, aggressive, snappy j sound.
