"J" pickups discussion and comparisons - PART II

Pardon me if this has already been asked, but...

Regarding the DC resistance on pickups, are pickups with a higher number resistance hotter than pickups with a lower resistance number? I'm deciding on replacement pups for a fretless jazz bass.

trying a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz Bridge paired with a Model J in the neck and it cops a nice PJ tone. The UJ is surprisingly stronger than the Model J in that I think I have the MJ set slightly higher than the UJ and even then the UJ overpowers it a bit. The both pickups fully on sound is much better than the UJ IMO as it still has a retains some both jazz pups on sound but doesn't get lost in the mix thanks to the mid-forward model J.

Trying to decide between the Dimarzio Sixties J and Relentless J. This would be going in a short scale MIJ J, so the sound is already a little darker than a standard scale J. This has me leaning toward the brighter Sixties J. But I also dislike the somewhat hollow, woody sound of a classic J bridge, so that is why I am considering the thicker Relentless. What about a Sixties in the middle (neck) and a Relentless in the bridge?

Anyone have experience with mixing the Sixties and Relentless Js? Or with mixing any pickups using a fatter, less vintage PU in the bridge to thicken it up?

I've had both sets in my MIJ Japan Jazz actually. I think a Sixties Neck / Relentless bridge would sound great, I remember favoring the neck pup on the Sixties set and the bridge pup on the Relentless set. The Sixties Neck J pup was still way more powerful than the bridge despite the bridge being overwound IME, so i think a hotter bridge would work well.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a J set for a stacked knobs 1961 J that needs a new set of pickups. I eventually want to get the og ones rewound but I'm thinking of trying something a bit different. I'm running Rotosound 77 flats on these and wouldn't mind getting more output and attack.

Fralins are good, Dimarzio Area Js or Wilde J45s are great low budget options

I use Nordstrand NS which are really nice but if I wanted 60's I would try and source Alleva Coppolo pickups.
But in your position for a 61 stack knob, I'd talk to pickup guys that have history or experience from that era.

Anyone know what fender jazz pickups have:
Grey bobbins
Cloth wire
Formvar wire
Flat (non beveled) poles
Neck dcr through pots is 6.62k
Bridge through pots is 6.83k
Unhooked i would guess they are 7k and 7.2k.

pickups are in an American Original jazz body i just picked up. Said they were Fender Aero pickups but a search yields nothing for those.
If it weren’t for the formvar wire I would say these are identical to some Pure Vintage 74 pickups I have.

Hi,

I'm looking for passive J pickups for a 4 strings short scale fretless bass with .656' (16.5mm) string spacing at bridge (Hipshot A Style Bass Bridge)...

The pickups must respect the narrow string spacing, no pole pieces, same output level on each of the 4 strings, noiseless and in cream/ivory color if possible...

Help me TalkBass Kenobi, you’re my only hope...

No closed white or ivory covers available right now. Checked all our distributors.

For blades a existing standard cover in white can be laser cut. Custom cut exposed blades from U.S. certified 1018 steel.

Stacked is possible for noise cancelling.

Neodymium so the bass sounds like bass. No real reason for batteries or ceramic / steel these days. Neo has the gauss that provides power without resorting to a op amp that is able to function with a battery.

These would be full custom. Modified laser cut covers. The blades would be custom cut , fit and Nickel plated in house. Two stacked pickups / 4 coils.

I took advantage of a Memorial Day sale on BestBassGear.com (no affiliation) and got these for a ridiculously great price. I installed them last week in my Fender Geddy Lee Signature (MIM), and I really like them a lot. They dropped right in with no wood work needed, which was really nice. Compared to the vintage Fender pickups that were originally in the bass the Duncans are a little bit hotter with no hum, and the bass still sounds like a jazz bass. This was a worthwhile upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

Thought I’d ask here before starting a new thread….I own a 2012 US jazz 5 that came with Aguilar Hot pickups in it. I’ve gigged it many times and although I’ve made it work I think I might be ready for a change. I feel like those pickups just have too much crunch and missing something (quite a bit) on the top end. I’m playing a lot more country type stuff with some rock thrown in. Every now and then I do some slap/pop type stuff and love that snappy/glassy top end. I’m really new in the jazz bass world and especially swapping p/u’s so any help would be appreciated. The bass is passive and looking to keep it that way (for now). Thanks TB
