Anything off Fresh Cream.

Fresh Cream is Jack Bruce on Fender Bass VI, the same one he played in the Graham Bond Organisation and Manfred Mann. He played a Danelectro throughout Disraeli Gears and the bass he's generally identified with, his Gibson EB3, throughout Wheels Of Fire. He made them all sound more or less the same through his Marshalls.

Here he is playing the Bass VI in a pre-Cream one-off band consisting of himself, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and a couple of members of Manfred Mann. After the head, he plays a few choruses of bass soloing, followed by Clapton's solo. The bass solo starts so high up on the neck, I didn't realize it was Bruce soloing until recently.

Another great bass line from Powerhouse, you can instantly tell it's Jack by his vibrato and sound.

What can you say about a Master...his attach on that EB3 is phenomenal, the tone he got out of those stacks of Marshall's has yet to be copied. His improvisation skills with Clapton were phenomenal. Saw West Bruce and Lang at The Warehouse in New Orleans...never will forget!

Does anyone have or know of a bass tutorial for Jack’s Smiles and Grins? I can play the vamp intro and pre verse riff but cannot figure out the exact notes Jack plays on the verses.

I could probably play Sunshine of your Love in my sleep & I absolutely love playing it & even spinning variations on it up & down the neck.

same goes for Egypt (The Chains Are On) by Jimmy Bain

My favorite Jack Bruce album is A Question of Time from 1989 is by far, my favorite thing I ever heard by Jack Bruce. I know many say his fretless intonation was poor, but I like his playing here. Life on Earth is my favorite track on that album.

I was going to jump in with a comment, and then read through the whole thread and saw that I already did, at length... 13 years ago! Post #19.
So, this time I'll be brief and pick only two Cream tracks: "Deserted Cities of the Heart" from "Wheels of Fire" (his variations are fascinating) and "I'm So Glad" from "Goodbye" (ferocious, inventive improvising, in concert).
Like McCartney, a genius multi-instrumentalist/singer/composer who expressed himself brilliantly on the bass.
